Well just an update that I haver started the course at TAFE and after 3months we are loving it.

There is also about 300 odd students at our Uni doing the student route and about 15 in my class that are doing it for residency.

So far so good and lets hope it gets us all what we want.

Hi Lee

Another quick question please. Did you not find the course fees were quite excessive as an overseas student?
Our daughters boyfriend would love to come and do the student option but whenever we have looked up the details on the web most of the courses just seem to be a ridiculous price.

The cost works out like this,

$4750 for course per semester x 4 (only first semester is to be paid upfront)
$400 for fees per semester which there is 4 of and these can be paid off in installements.

Also we just had our 2nd fee bill and it states that if we are in severe hardship we only need to pay half up front minimum and the rest in installements but we need to prove our hardship.

But we will pay the fees as it will lead to PR in the long run, but we have financial security which releives the pressure but most on our course seem to have saved up for there fees and there kids education for the first few years, most have sold there house and used the profit for this, which is a big gamble.

You can work 20hrs a week each (me and wife) it works out we pay the bills and have enough left over for fun stuff

You just need to keep $15,000 dollars of your earnings for your course fees over the period (1 and half years), which is easily done, just dont go out on the piss every night and save save save, its only for 2yrs.

So in your case as the SOL list stands at the moment (presuming it is the same when you have finished your course) can you apply for PR straight away? Are there plenty of jobs in this type of work?

Thanks

J

Hi Lee

I'm doing the Student route too. In July I'll be starting a Security Engineering course at the Melbourne Tafe

Just a couple of questions.. I know the Tafe's may differ, but how many hours/days a week are you there?. I've been told I'll be doing only 3 days a week.. so just wondering if you think thats about right?

Also, have you found it easy getting the part time work?..

Cheers
Gaz

I am doing 2 days a week at the moment, but ive been told that its either 2 or 3 days.

Also with us doing 2 days a week these are from 8am until 5pm so i guess if its over 3 days the hours would be less i would presume.

Sorry, me again. Where there any entry requirements to the course i.e. did you have/need experience in horticulture? Which career path on the SOL do you hope to take once you have finished your course? i.e does it give you a few options e.g. general gardener, landscape gardener, greenkeeper.

Thanks.

J

I havent had any experiance in horticulture, stefan from studyoptions.com got me my place on the course for free of charge and he reuquested me last college certificate which was in computer science.

And I choose the landscape gardner as my career, solely because you get a taste of everything rather than one specialized area. IE turf managment.
we do everything from botany to retaining walls and reticulation, ect.
