There is a HUGE difference when you include the fact that in the UK you might not have even seen the sun for the entire day and then it goes down at 4pm! It is sooooo depressing!

Re: Does it ever get cold in Oz?
I wish something would go down at 4pm here.
It would liven office life up and give me something to look forward to. |

My OH and other Aussie friends had a huge whinging session at the end of winter complaining about how depressing Melbourne weather was...I just couldn't see where they were coming from! Maybe after a few more Melbourne winters it'll get to me.....but I doubt it! However if you do have a predisposition to SAD then SE Qld is definitely the place to be as winters are generally spectacular there. But for me personally I don't like the year round early darkness. |

It doesn't matter where you are or what you do, there's always something to moan about. How boring would life be if we got everything we wanted?? We'd probably be moaning about that too!!

I have enough to moan about with a 13 yr old daughter and her bedroom tidiness, I need nothing else to moan about  |

I never said that it was only a UK thing I was just speaking from my own experience. I have never felt like this in my 30 years of life in Adelaide and felt it for the first time in the UK.

But now, often awake at 5am, getting things done. It is different, and I am beginning to like it, as long as I don't go to bed at midnight ! |

Over 40 years in Canada and I've never been so cold as I am during a Perth winter.
I'm not looking forward to it. When it gets really hot here (like in the next few days), I remind myself that I'll be freezing by June-July. |

I don't ever remember being depressed....but we're all different.
I've been in the UK over the last 2 xmases....and in both of them had a hell of a lot of sunny weather....freezing cold, but sunny. Pics I took on the way to the airport last week - sky was like this a lot of the time I was there... I like the sparkling sunny winter days like in the second pic. |

I wouldn't let the sunset bother you too much. There is more to life than that.
Having survived 3 WA winters we have built our house with reverse cycle air con. We don't need it in the summer as there is nothing between us and the ocean and very litle between us and the Estuary so we get lovely cooling sea breezes and the occasional cooler easterlies. However, in the winter those lovely breezes turn into bone chilling gale force winds and that's when our air con system will be fully utilised. As others have said you do get many gorgeous, sunny days but the nights generally get really cold and you get periods of heavy rain too. |
