Default does anyone know what happens to all the NI we pay if we leave ?

Say we leave for good and never come back, what happens to the money we have put away in NI for most of our working lives, can we claim a state pension from Uk ?

Does anyone know ?

Thanks Carrianne

I would like to know if family allowance would still be paid in bank account if we were not here anymore?

Not exactly. You are entitled to a UK state retirement pension based on the contributions you have made. Check out your entitlement, you can do it online (they post the reasult to you.) Do a search on something like 'UK retirement forecast'.

Cheers - Don

Hi Carrianne.

Have a look at this page (which includes the request for a pension forecast that Don has mentioned):
http://www.inlandrevenue.gov.uk/nic/intserv/osc.htm

Best regards.

Just to add, you can't ask for the details via this link as they want you to go through a different route to the form on the page.

Just of a bit of a pain that's all.

Entitlement

OK from memory there are 49 years between the age of 16 and 65. Allowing for five years gap (perhaps for education or military service, or overseas travel ?) it has been determined that 44 years contributions are required to achieve a full UK state pension.

Less than 11 years and you fail to qualify at all. 11 years and you get 11/44ths, 12 gives you 12/44ths etc.

Note it might be 39 for women rather than 44.

While you are in OZ no contributions are being made to your record unless you elect to make voluntary contributions. There's a five year limit to the acceptance of back contributions.

Payment

If you live in Australia then the UK pension will not be index linked. It will not rise incrementally with the cost of living and will stay at your age 65 amount. The Aussies may also take this pension into account when determining what they should give you.

If you find yourself in the UK your pension may be index linked.

Recommendation

Drop a line to the folks at the Contribution Agency in Newcastle about the status of your existing contributions record

Whoops ... since 1999 the Contributions Agency has been administered by the Inland Revenue ... http://www.inlandrevenue.gov.uk/nic/intserv/osc.htm
