We hope to be going to Brisbane very soon and have never been before, was wondering if you need a 4x4 vehicle for some of the terrain that we might encounter while travelling from Brisbane up the gold and sunshine coast looking for an area to settle. Also do you recommend diesel or petrol as have been looking at Pajero's and most seem to be petrol.?????Replies welcome

I don't know?
I've got a 4X4 in Birmingham in the UK and it's parked up the kerb at the moment
You shouldn't need one for most of the places you will be going unless you are looking out in the bush, and then off the road.
I had a 1.8 4 door nissan car and that was ok, most places had sealed roads, makes life much easier.
But then again I like my 4X4 even if it is for the wife

Be aware that most vehicles like pajeros are being dumped as fuel has risen, some cost around $150 to fill, cheap in UK money maybe, on an OZ income hideous, see how far you will need to drive before going for a gas guzzler.

Roads are sealed in most places the average person will ever visit. If you go camping and such fair play but even then a "softroader" may be cheaper and a better option. We went for the Honda CRV since its fuel economy is very good but can do the 4x4 thing at a push - nothing hardcore but all I or anyone I know would ever use it for.
We still prefer our Ford Falcon for pretty much everything other than hauling dogs or going out for the day to Straddie, picnics or picking up goods.
The new fad is the multipurpose vehicle such as the Mitsubishi Outlander etc.
Renting a car when you first arrive for a couple of weeks whilst you make up your mind might not be a bad option.
Of course - nothing wrong with a Pajero of course I guess. Plenty of them about.

Hi there,
Basically no you dont need a 4x4, the roads/highways are fine with a 'normal' car.
We have moved to Perth, however we by-passed Brisbane on the way over and stayed there for two weeks. My father (bless him) had a very good friend who he had kept in touch with for many years and he lived pretty much outback in Brissy and we stayed with him for a few days.
As we were only visiting Brisbane we had hired a saloon (sudan) car and it coped very well, considering the terrain, as my Dads friend lived out in the sticks.
His partner had a saloon car (she had owned for 12 years!) and he had an old ute. While we stayed with them they took us out for a meal to the 'local' town (6 shops, 1 resturant and a bottleshop!) and on the way back he decided to take us back via the off-beaten track and look for kangaroos.... I was more :scared: as it was an old car with 6 of us in it and it was very, very dark. We were in the middle of ....bush..(?) We did see some kangaroos though...3 dead ones and a couple of live ones. However as we drove further along he pointed out that the ute in the field opposite was in fact 'shooting the jumpers'
and all I wanted to do was go back!
Aplogies for digressing...I could write a thread on my Dads friend bush stories!! Bloody amazing!!
Anyhow back to the thread if you want a 4x4 get one, you dont need to justify it, there are loads out here and there are loads on the school run (like you wouldnt believe!) have fun and do want you want.
Best of luck,
TF

Although to be fair, you could say that about most places in the UK.
