I have often found some of the most tough looking and tough talking Aussie's turn out to have English grandmother's or similar or were originally ten pound poms themselves. It is surprising how many Australians have close ties to Britain, and so to hate Brits would be would not make sense! Much ribbing takes place, but they dish it out to the Kiwis just as much it seems.

Suffice it to say, this would be the attitude of most people around the world.

You guys are flattering yourselves thinking us "ozzies" notice you more than they should.
Ain't never heard of 'Tanzanian-Bashing tho, have you?

Pom Bashing is a national pastime in Australia! You're just in denial.

I wouldnt say the aussies hate us.

I think it is more we tend to wind each other up.
It really comes naturally to wind up my potential in-laws and they do the same to me.

Seems to be all good natured at the moment though.

The Aussie sense of humour involves a lot of piss taking, especially at POMS, they do not like it in return however!!
Isn't that the kind of humour which exists everywhere? Ie try living as a Welsh man in England plenty of people who find it still funny to mention the sheep story. What about the Irish jokes? And if you are a German you are constantly confronted by holiday and towel stories. Oh yes and not to forget the t-shirts stating England won 5:1 against Germany.

As I said that kind of humour or pi** take exists all around the world.

I'm an Aussie. I don't hate Brits. Quite the opposite. I have a morbid curiousity about this strange species. The way they speak and think interests me. I find British comedy thoroughly humorous.

The way I see it... the relationship between Australia and England is like that of siblings.

"Oh you bloody Poms!!!"
"****** convicts!"

* Laugh *

I think it's quite natural that Australians would prefer other Australians get any available jobs first. But, really, the employer will inevitably choose the most qualified applicant.

So to answer your question, I can't think of any situation in which an Aussie has said they hated the Poms.

We came here open minded.......but to be honest thought we probably would get some 'Pommie bashing'. Actually, wot we've found is a genuine liking for the "Poms".

Example ....I got a phonecall and chap said "can I speak to Pommie David?"

I replied "Pommie David not in...who'm I speaking to please?"

Chap replied "Merv"

I replied "Oh Aussie Merv...[silence].......well then Aussie Merv, Pommie David's not in so I'll get him to ring you back shall I"

Both laughed.........point taken .....but no offence meant on his part......... none taken on mine

Lets face it... if we start getting PC the world is gonna be a sad place.....we are wot we are and no doubt there will be Pommie bashing going on .........and Irish bashing............and German bashing....wherever in the world you live......

Treat it with the contempt it deserves

On the whole the Aussies are decent people, as are the Irish, as are the Germans, as are the Brits ............

If you're coming to Australia........

No worries

PS; Aussie Merv gave Pommie David the job!

There is no labour market testing for permanent residents.

Most Australians could not care less where you are from.

It takes some getting used to hearing terms of abuse being offered as expresions of friendship.

The best of friends will call each other dopey mongrels or worse.

If you are told you would not work in an iron lung, you are probably being asked to slow down.

Interesting point. One of the things I dislike about the UK (let's not start THAT sort of thread again!) is the fact that everything has to be PC these days. What's the Aussie take on political correctness?

Ex-work colleague of mine spent 13 years in new zealand, loved it but came back to his partner ( long story ).

He told me it depends how you act once there, if you act like a pom and have pom friends only etc etc. then you will probably never fit in.
He reckons you have to adapt to the culture and become a part of your new home to be accepted.
If people see you making the effort then you are much more readily accepted.

I don't dislike anyone i have worked with because of thier nationality, maybe their attitudes, but never their creed.

Paul.
