Do not breed in Australia?
Thought this may interest thoose who are thinking of having kids in Australia.
SO the Government can find $400 million or more to pay a big US defence company to replace the combat systems on our Collins-class submarines ("Subs need a $400m makeover", 14-15/9), but cannot manage the $400 million or so for paid maternity leave.
Is it more important to spend about half a billion dollars on the Collins-class submarines on top of the $5 billion they have already cost, or to find the money to allow mothers to stay at home during those first vital formative weeks with their babies?

SENATOR Minchin claims paid maternity leave is "middle class welfare". Tony Abbott declares it will be introduced "over his Government's dead body". If paid maternity leave is "middle-class welfare" could they explain why the billions spent on a non-means-tested subsidy for private health insurance, large grants to private schools and the non-means-tested baby bonus that delivers the highest benefits to the highest paid, aren't?
