They were told that they could have a fantastic life and accommodation, relative to their bombed out and rationed homeland, if they achieved average income and wealth. Some seem to have assumed that it was a right not an opportunity.
They were initially housed in Nissan hut camps and provided with the necessities. How long they stayed there was up to them.
Some could not grasp what was required of them to improve their circumstances and they gained well deserved reputation for whinging and sponging.
With the Australian public becoming heartily sick of them and improvements in conditions in their homelands, by the mid 1960's there was no desire for continuance of nor need for the assisted passage. Thereafter whinging would be at their own expense.

Still there after all these years.

Secondly, only ~20 of Australians have convict ancestry. ~24% of Australians are immigrants with no convict ancestry. The rest are Australian born with no convict ancestry (like me).
Oh, and... 2 million Brits have convict ancestry. Perhaps we should be reminding Poms who the original convicts were.

Well... no. Firstly, those Australians who do have convict ancestry are usually proud of it.

Since nobody can actually agree on what 'pom' means and who it applies to, 'convict' is a suitable reply.
