Lovely but not exactly a typical suburb.
So fixated on money. Merely 2km away, and closer to the coast you can cut that average by a third.

I seem to recall money being a big issue when you moved to Melbourne. Isn't it funny when you start living somewhere, the money factor you once had before you live in a location just disappears

Cost of housing has already been discussed too and its no secret Sydney is at the top. Somewhere has to be. But like most places in the world top housing costs generally come for a reason and usually it is down to a popularity vote based on lifestyle, job availability and variety.

You are right, I couldn't live in Brisbane but I have given it a chance - I have asked and got very little. 20km to the nearest beach is just too far for the Australian experience.

Melbourne on the other hand I could live. Hobart is another. Perth at a push. Just thought I best clarify that.
A family doing well in Sydney, having moved a few years back could actually set up quite well in Melbourne and have a coffee and avo on toast every day of the week.

Someone was talking about wages not being so out of whack in Australian society. What this tells me is that just about everyone living in a good sized house in the inner burbs played the market, got in 15+ years ago, inherited or got a bonus at work. Even 2 incomes might struggle.

Depends on how fixated you are about buying property.

I know families in Sydney, Melbourne and South East UK who cannot do holidays because they are paying mortgages. On the flip side I know plenty of families who can afford plenty of holidays because they pay rent. Of course, if you live in central London you are screwed either way - rent or mortgage

Life is too short to suffer that.

I love visiting Melbourne but I couldn't see myself living there.

And I couldn't find a job in Melbourne that will pay better than my current job in Sydney.
