Default Customs - help needed re "new goods"

Hi
Just had our paperwork through from Pickfords for clearing our container through Customs and Quarantine.

It mentions that we need to provide receipts for any new/unused items which are less than 12 months old.

We bought but didn't use a new Dyson about a week before the packers came to pack the house up - it cost me £149.99.

What are the customs charges on things like that? Is it likely to be just GST or is it an extortionate amount?!

Thanks in advance - just want to be prepared lol

Hi Tilly
We had just bought a new computer before we left, and they didn't charge us anything. I think they use discretion on personal items. I suppose if we'd taken 10 new computers, there might have been questions though... Probably a good idea to buy the Dyson in the UK, they're a lot cheaper there!

Thanks Jen - I agree, a lot cheaper! I think the same one was over $600 here :scared:

I'll dig the receipt out and attach it to the paperwork and cross my fingers lol

I wouldn't worry about it too much. We brought loads of new stuff & we never told them it was new. We had no problems. I think they are after large amounts of new stuff that you could possibly resell. If you attach the receipt you are going to end up paying. I wouldn't bother.

I agree here - we bought a new leather 3 piece suite weeks before as we knew how much they would be out here. We didn't mention it.

Hi,

Have to say I wouldn't say anything was new, if questioned about clean and good condition say bought and saved over a year ago.

Really they are looking for things that people are trying to get into Oz for resale on a much larger scale, full on customs/duty dodgers, your not really one of those are you?

All the best

Tracey

When you come into Australia, you have a $900 tax-free allowance on newly purchased goods. Kids under 18 are entitled to $450 worth only.

If I'm reading it right, new clothes and new shoes in accompanied babbage don't count towards your allowance. So ladies - go crazy and buy all the shoes you want and fill your suitcases with them.
