It might sound strange... but for my curiosity can anyone tell me what happens when you cross from one state to another?? I know that in Africa the borders are between countries but they are really time consuming and the officials study your passports for hours.....

No border controls as such but...
You're not supposed to bring fruit from NSW into Victoria when you cross at Albury-Wodonga. There's a bin in a lay-by not long after you cross the Murray where you can dump any fruit you have. (It's to stop the spread of fruit fly.)
If you have a 4x6 trailer in Victoria you don't have to register it but if you take it to NSW you have to register it as NSW requires these trailers to be registered.
There are some road rule differences.
Also I think you need a passport (or a Document of Identity) to go to Norfolk Island.

Its only quarentine stuff and this will get more strict as time goes on - WA is the most strict and then SA.
For more info goto the AQIS website

Also some of the quarantine borders aren't in line with the state borders.
Here's a doc on it http://www.daff.gov.au/__data/assets...240/reader.pdf
In Vic, it's a honesty system, there's no checkpoint with cops and I would imagine it's the same in the other states.

Dont try and take your horses across the border into Vic though, there are people stationed on some roads (the unsealed back road down from Delegate for example) to stop you taking your horse float!
BTW it is a bit of a standing joke amongst older NSWmen that you need a passport to get down into Mexico (Victoria = South of the Border)

I believe you can get spot checked though at particularly fly ridden times of the year.

I'm all for having the Cockies needing a passport to come down here. They could also do with some driving lessons

The nullabour and Kunanarra checkpoints are manned (or womaned - her name is Natalie) and will do random checks - this usually means everyone unless there is alot of traffic - which there isn`t
