Actually, I was just reading that it was an unlucky colour in China.
Edit: Actually. Lucky in China but the write in red when firing people or cancelling/ending relationships.
In some other cultures it means the writer is about to die!!!

I just looked and red is a lucky colour but you shouldn't write people's names including your own in red.

In the West, red ink symbolises debt as accountants (before computers) used it for that purpose. Hence the saying "in the red".
But generally it is considered poor form/bad manners.

I looked as well and one stated that only the Emporer wrote in red and any 'commoner' caught doing so would be executed. Now that's not very lucky!
