The great firewall of China is exactly the same 'solution' as the Australian government want to implement - namely an ISP level block on websites contained on both a blacklist and found heuristically. However you want to paint it - that's censorship on a national level - and the only other countries that do that are North Korea, Burma and China.

Yea - I hope it continues to snowball. Was interested to learn the other day, that Stephen Conroy, the architect of this piece of shit bill is a British Expat (born and raised in Ely).

I still don't reckon it'll happen. I still think it's a smoke screen.

I'm guessing the courier mail is not a class newspaper? Some of the comments are hilarious.

"Why is some faceless bureaucrat to be given the same powers to censor our internet access as a prison screw has over the perversions of an uncontrollable pedophile? The mechanics are different but that is the ultimate result of the Federal Government's ill-considered and ill-liberal plan to filter the internet." Terry Sweetman in Friday's Courier-Mail.
So is this bloke saying he wants to watch child porn

Always guaranteed to provide a laugh - Courier Mail comments are at often hilarious in their stupidity. Most of the contributors appear not to have a brain cell to share between them.

Is this the reason why they want Internet Censorship?

http://video.google.com.au/videoplay?docid=7866929448192753501&ei=2AseSba-JafcqAOF1NHGBw&q=Loose+Change+2nd+Edition+&hl=en

If not for a few brave journalists we would never be given subjective evidence on major world issues. Such as issues they take our soldiers to war.

Since the media is controlled and owned by a room full of people. It's possible to silence debate, ridicule dissent and slowly take our freedoms from us.

So is this an example, of a real reason, on why they want to censor the internet.

Perhaps you should allow your government to place monitoring CCTV in each room of your house to provide ultimate protection. Lets hope you don't break any current laws, or any that are yet to be implemented.

Your willingness to limit your own rights and independence in favour of government is both astounding and depressing

I joined this debate thinking it might be interesting, but actually it has become an opportunity for left wing ranting.

I haven't yet been convinced that CCTV is a menace in society, it is why we need CCTV that is the menace as IMO.

I'll leave you to it, Good luck to all of you.

Why ban violent video games, but not violent films.

Apparently, Jack the Ripper commited crimes before violent video games or films existed (I know hard to believe!).

Next they will be saying bad people will commit crimes regardless of video games or films....

OK, I know this is not in the same area -just purchased a mobile and found I need either a driving licence or passport to register it. On asking why...."In case you use it to blow up an embassy".
I now have it chained to my leg to prevent its theft by a sneaky light fingered terrorist - to smart to buy and register his own mobile!
BUT if it does get nicked, maybe all the CCTV will help prove it was not me!

Just playing devil's advocate again.

Some people who see ads don't buy the product. Some people buy a product without seeing the ad. Some people buy a product after seeing the ad.

Some people who watch porn don't get horny (usually women ). Some people get horny without watching porn (usually men ). Some people get horny after watching porn.

So, even though some people don't get violent after watching violent movies or playing violent games, and some people get violent without watching violent movies or playing violent games; is it possible that some people may get violent after watching violent movies or playing violent games?

Good post! Australia is not just the most censored 'western' style democracy, it is more censored than any boderline 'western' nation such as say Russia or Brazil, it is the only vaguely western nation to ban the sale of XXX-rated non-violent erotica. It seems a glitch in this society, and it seems impossible to remedy. Somehow the political dynamic here, totally out of character in terms of the wider society, seems to attract censorship nuts.
The concept of free speech and individual rights here is non-existant. Love this place too-hate this aspect. If it gets worse I am out.

...and the ISP filtering will destroy the internet...still hoping this lunatic Con-Roy and Ruddneck come to their senses and scrap the idea.
