Our last elec bill was $299 for the quarter and that was way higher than it had been previously, it gave me quite a shock to open it. That was in a townhouse in Melbourne with reverse cycle heating/cooling. Some of these figures are incredibly high.

Ours ranges from $800-$1100 per quarter for a 4 bedroom house in Queensland.

It doesn't matter what exchange rate I use to try and cook the result, financially we are definitely worse off. On the plus side my family are in a much nicer environment here than in Greater London and it's a kinder, more dignified place to grow old in.

There was a thread on my Facebook page from friends in Australia talking about their power bills, most have seen big increases and many are now paying what you are.

Not intending to climb on the Aus vs UK bandwagon but how much is a litre of petrol in the UK these days? It's surely over 2 pounds a litre by now Only seems like yesterday we were paying 80p a litre.

The last couple of years that we were there, our gas bills went up astronomically to being more expensive than electricity whicvh prior to that was way more expensive than gas.

I think relatively thanks to the exchange rate it has not changed. In 2005 when I first came here petrol was 80p vs 92c with an exchange rate of 2.44
now it's £1.38 vs $1.62 at an exchange rate of 1.45 so converting that all into dollars is:

UK $1.95 to $2.00 a rise since 2005 of 1%
AU $0.92 to $1.62 a rise since 2005 of 76%

Where in Australia is petrol $1.62? In Brisbane it's currently $1.45: over the past few weeks I've seen it as high as $1.53 and down to $1.35. $1.62 or higher is the price you might expect in a remote town.

Average unleaded petrol prices

Except in GBP petrol was 80p, now 138p (if you're lucky, mine is 141) is increase of 72.5% so not a lot of difference really

Since moving from London to Sydney, we pay a lower % of salary in rent for a nicer place to live in.

We still go out just as much but also save more than we did in the UK.

Love the weather

Electric bill was $170 a quarter

Horses for courses really but I'm doing much better here.
