As a senior .NET C# developer you would be looking at $60 - $70 per hour. In a permy role you would be looking at a salary between $70K - $100K. Government permy jobs do not pay as much as the private sector. Hope this helps.

P.S A lot of government departments here still use VB.NET as a main development language. Yuck!!

Thanks for that. If my maths is right then the potential earnings from contracing dont seem wildy different form a good perementant role, especially when holidays super etc are taken into account.

Is that peoples experience or does contracting actually offer better tax breaks, lifestyle etc?

Contracting certainly doesn't have any tax benefits here. The 80/20 rule is strictly enforced by the ATO....unlike IR35 in the U.K.

So as an example if you were earning $50hr and put through 40hrs for the week you'd be getting $2000 (+gst) they would take $40 from you? (for basically paying you your money)
As well as charge the client at least 10% plus payroll tax and workers comp.
I think the client is charged and not the contractor but if the agency also acts in a PAYG payroll capacity they will normally charge for the service, if you get it paid gross into a business account then there is not normally any additional deductions.
