IT Contracting in OZ ( Brissy )

Is there any introduction to the options anywhere on the web, or can someone list the options.

I was freelance in the UK for 14 years, but know the rules are a lot tighter here.

Do agencies help / run brolly companies type of thing ?

Anyone actually recommend an agency in brissy ?

Hi Ian

Welcome to Aus :D. Try www.brainbox.com.au for some general info.
www.seek.com.au and www.jobserve.com.au for job searches.
My last contract was with Ambit International in Perth. They were OK.

I am currently contracting through candle recruitment. They are one of the best i have dealt with in Brisbane. They can package your pay for about 4% but they do it as pay as you go so no expenses can be claimed. Or they can pay a company such as http://www.myitg.com/ and they will salary package so you can get expenses etc. They charge about 1.7% plus about 2% for insurances etc and these are who i use just for ease.
What It do you do cos I can give you a referral to candle as they cover most of the contract work in the city.

Watch out for some agencies who advertise jobs which dont exist and some promise the earth but give you nowt. Believe me you can easily be tapped up by anumber of agencies for the same jobs and the companies dont like that.

Let me know and i can get you a contact. Where in bayside are ya?

Oh i forgot you can set up your own company too but not sure what that entails. The expenses you can claim here are not much compared to the Uk though so you pay loads of tax...bummer.

pm me if you want more info.

fantastic thread.

We're coming to Wello Point in Jan/Feb. Validated already.

I'm an IT contractor too. Any chance of keeping in touch ? I could do with a beer or two and a chat once we arrive ?

How're you finding the commute into the CBD ? Hope it's ok cos we love Wellington Point.

They charge you 4% to run you as a PAYG contractor, thats a bloody scandal, what are they doing for that 4% then? it shouldnt cost you as a contractor anything, their costs should be covered through the margin they charge the end client, it shouldnt impact you any way.

Hi I'm with Candle as well. They charge me about 2% admin plus GST. They also pay into your Super fund. I live in Manly. not farfrom Wello Point

I'm amazed, I remember hearing about this sort of thing going on 5-10yrs ago but thought everyone was on an even keel now and all the agencies costs we're taken from the client, not the candidate.
So as an example if you were earning $50hr and put through 40hrs for the week you'd be getting $2000 (+gst) they would take $40 from you? (for basically paying you your money)
As well as charge the client at least 10% plus payroll tax and workers comp.

This thread is of interest to me. Would it be legal for an agency to employ my overseas (non-Australian) company which pays me a salary? That way my company could cover my expenses (to an extent) and I may not have to pay so much Australian income tax.

Hi

Anyone give me a rough idea what a senior .NET C# contractor might earn in Brisbane based on 40 weeks per year and how that stacks up against a permenant post?

Cheers

Adrian
