I have the wonderful Mirena whom I intend to be good friends with once I get to Australia.
Figuring that I have another 4 years on it, that shall take me to the menopause.

In Boxhill, Vic there is a Family Planning Clinic...can't remember details now, but you used to pay an annual subscription fee and then only a notional amount for your prescription...doc sees you at the clinic.
Best thing was that it was open late in the evenings (til 9pm or so)...on Whitehorse Road near tram terminus.

The only guaranteed way not to get pregnant is not to have sex.
I've reached that point in my life where I find it more rewarding to play chess!!!

For any contraceptive pill, you will need to visit the GP. As far as I am aware, there are no other ways to get it. This is fairly easy to do as you can visit any Dr here in Oz... there is no obligation to stay with one Dr as the NHS in the UK encourages you to do.
The Dr's fee will probably be between $35 and $60 depending on where you live. Some of that cost (around $25) will be refunded by Medicare if you are eligible for it (ie Australian citizen or PR or have PR application pending).
The pharmacy will then charge you for the pill. Its not free like in the UK. The exact charge will depend on which pill it is, and your status in terms of entitlement to concession/healthcare cards.
If you have a healthcare/concession card, then the most you will pay will be $4.60 (not including any brand surcharges if they apply). If you don't have a healthcare card (and most new immigrants to Oz won't), then you have to pay the full cost of the medication upto a maximum of $28.60. Is this starting to sound complicated yet?!?
Most pills cost around $17.00. ie Microgynon 30 - 4 months. However, there are some that the government does not subsidise, and these can cost upto $60.00. The way to check is to ask the prescribing Dr if the pill is covered by the PBS or not. If it is covered by the PBS, then the most you will pay is $28.60 for any drug. If it is not covered, then you could end up paying big bucks. Check with the Dr.
I hope this helps! I know its long winded... but then thats the situation with drugs and Dr's in Australia. Complicated.
Regards,
Keith.

Just though i would say that this was a great reply.
I would just like to add though that i bought an empty box with me from the UK and took it to the GP. That way they can have a look at the hormone % and try to give you a very similar version here. I was lucky enough to be on Microgynon 30 which as mentioned is available here.
I paid $46 for the GP and about $25 for 4 months however the GP gave me 2 repeat prescripions(sp?) so i only need to see him once a year rather than every 6 months like in the UK.
I managed to get $31.?? back from medicare for the GP fee but nothing for the pills - you have to remember that here in Oz they want you to breed so i think secretly they want you NOT to be able to afford it hehehe.
On another note i have found that you can normally get an appointment with the GP the same day if you phone in the morning, which is brilliant. I got caught out in the UK as i left it till last thing to go to the doctors and phoned for an appointment 2 weeks before we flew. Can you believe i was told that there was not an available appointment for a nurse or doctor for 3 weeks, i kid you not 3 WEEKS........

As most of you 'ladies' know, the pill is available free of charge in the UK. Is this the case in Australia, if not, what is the cost?
Also, would like to know how you go about obtaining it, do you 'have' to make an appt at your GP's or can you just pop into any family planning clinic (as C does now)?
All advice greatly appreciated - as always

I remember a joke about it:
Now dont stop me for it... let me speak up..
Once having sex (young couple not married):
Girl: What should we keep the name of kid...
Boy: Even after putting the condy if it arrives then Magician...

You could always just get a full plumbing conversion done in the Uk before you come out there then no need to worry about pills, condoms, coils, babies etc. Unless of course you eventually want a kid, in this case ignore the above lol
