Australia is extremely like America in so many ways, we stayed in Homestead and immediately commented on how similar it was to Melbourne. I do hate the way they have aligned themselves to such an extent with the US.

Lots of stuff, the style of housing, the fast food, cars, even the flag waving backslapping attitude. When we were in Homestead (Florida) it could have been Melbourne. Even things like motels, the obsession with big V8's, the awful TV, all sorts of big and small things.
As for watching American TV, ha! That's what Foxtel and UK TV are for :D |

I meant the food was poor. The best choice was the asian food places which cooked fresh meat and veg, otherwise it was cheap cuts of meat which they passed off as quality steak. And the emphasis seemed to be on quantity not quality (one of the reasons we actually ended up in Spain). Also the fact that you cannot walk anywhere outside the city. The north of Brisbane was a sprawling urban jungle leading to nowhere except more shopping malls or housing developments. As I said it's horses for courses and I like to walk so Brisbane wasn't for me. HOWEVER…Australia will always have a place in my heart. It got under my skin. I did love Melbourne, I also lived in Perth for a while which was a great city but a bit removed from the rest of the world. However, my absolute favourite place has to be the NT. It is simply stunning. The people are friendly if a bit wild, but I loved it. Darwin was still quite small when I stayed there but it was a full on party town. Hoping to bring my children down under next year for a holiday and to introduce them to what was an important part of my life. See you then :D Nic |

Melbourne is certainly not a place I would associate with the US. Fast food outlets? What the type where you see a 4 lane road with them stacked sure either side. Sure. The Purley Way (Just south of London), Parramatta Road Sydney, Florida (apparently). So .... sometimes you have to drive through them to get from one place to another, not hangout in them. |

I've never been to QLD so I can't comment. I enjoyed Florida very much and found it nothing like anywhere in Australia I have been apart from the fact it is surround by ocean.

Re: Contemplating moving to Australia...
Is life better in Australia than in the UK? An impossible question to answer as it depends entirely on your personal definition of what is good and what isn't. One poster here misses "Match of the Day" - plenty of those on TV here, just not the English Premier League. Another likes Melbourne because it is the closest to a UK city - plenty of UK cities in the UK, why come halfway round the world to find one? Weather - some love the climate in the northern regions, others prefer the south: who's to say which is 'better' in any objective sense?
If people were honest they would say "I prefer Melbourne to Brisbane", not "Brisbane is a terrible third rate city". The former is obviously a personal opinion, the latter purports to be an objective assessment - which it certainly isn't. When potential immigrants ask for advice, make sure that they can differentiate between factual statements (which are helpful in their decision making) and personal opinion/bias which may or may not be useful. |

Is Jupiters different from any other casino? I've been, it's ok, it's a casino with bars and restaurants but not having been to any others I've no idea if it's good or bad

Well granted, I've only seen the LV ones on't tele. :D and it doesn't compare but then I've only been a couple of times.
Each time I've gone I've left by 11 and it's been relatively peaceful. The main downside (according to First Born) is that half of Surfers/Broadie drunks seem to head that way for the taxi rank for some reason. |

I was there because I was speaking at a conference. I was walking back to "Broadie" in a suit (without the tie), an endless stream of bogans walking to the casino abused me for wearing a suit.
