Just for the record, IMO, Melbourne is a far better city that Brisbane. It feels more European whereas Brisbane felt more American. But as I said, thats my opinion, it depends what you're looking for.
Good luck. Nic Yeah I agree with you about Brisbane, even my kids said 'it's just like Florida here' meaning Brisbane. I agreed. |

Hello everyone,
I'm really just looking for some advice and success stories of people moving to Australia to start living there. I have a young family which consists of my wife (24) myself (25) and our 5 month old little girl Isla. We have been toying with the idea of moving abroad since we met, but now feel with the little one it may be a good step to give her a better life as we are fed up with the UK. I work for a large organisation who can offer transfers and sponsoring so would be fairly straightforward for us to move, I am an electrical engineer by trade as well so this is another benefit. I am really just looking to hear from people who made the plunge and did what we are thinking of doing, how you got on and what challenges you faced... We are looking to move to either Melbourne or Brisbane but would also depend on where my current company would need me to be based, though they have told me I should be able to pick one of the two above. Anyway I will stop babbling and I look forward to hearing from you all Thanks Dan I have been living here in OZ now for some 14 years and there a re a few things people dont seem to have informed you about: 1) You will miss the cold morning with a heavy frost on the ground where the grass crunches under your feet. 2) As strange as it is I miss the roads and the traffic, the M1 & M25 3) I miss the good TV programs, TV over here in OZ is really crap and so biased towards america it is not funny 4) I moss match of the day on a Saturday night I think you really need to think hard about the little things you will miss as well as missing family and the town where you both grew up, living here in OZ is not all sunshine and surf boards. As for Melbourne or Brisi I would pick Melbourne anyday it is the closest thing to a UK city you will get here, alternativly think about moving to New Zealand. Any ways just my two bobs worth Good luck with what ever you decide to do and where ever you decide to go, just make sure you get return tickets. Karl |

They're not, they honest and most of the people who've posted like or love Australia, some don't like it, that's life. However none of us are you or have your situation so what works for one, doesn't work for another. Getting the suggestion to the make a list of pros and cons is about the best idea and always has been. We have no idea if you have close family, if your wife will be happy having no close family and friends nearby to help with the child, if you like the weather hot, humid, dry, chilly winters, beaches, blah blah blah. Only you know that. Work out what you definitely need and what you can do without. |

When we were in Florida we commented on how much like Melbourne it was. Brisbane would certainly get my vote but I dont mind Melbourne, the 2 best cities in Australia to live by a long shot.
I like America but what bugs me about Australia is how far up Americas bum they are. Always trying to be like America, why can't they just try and be like Australia and stop following the Stars and Stripes. |
Re: Contemplating moving to Australia...
Australia is extremely like America in so many ways, we stayed in Homestead and immediately commented on how similar it was to Melbourne. I do hate the way they have aligned themselves to such an extent with the US.
