Hello everyone,
I'm really just looking for some advice and success stories of people moving to Australia to start living there. I have a young family which consists of my wife (24) myself (25) and our 5 month old little girl Isla. We have been toying with the idea of moving abroad since we met, but now feel with the little one it may be a good step to give her a better life as we are fed up with the UK. I work for a large organisation who can offer transfers and sponsoring so would be fairly straightforward for us to move, I am an electrical engineer by trade as well so this is another benefit. I am really just looking to hear from people who made the plunge and did what we are thinking of doing, how you got on and what challenges you faced... We are looking to move to either Melbourne or Brisbane but would also depend on where my current company would need me to be based, though they have told me I should be able to pick one of the two above. Anyway I will stop babbling and I look forward to hearing from you all Thanks Dan |
Re: Contemplating moving to Australia...
drud88, do explore and research your options.
I sincerely hope it's the pull option rather than push factor which made you want to move. Honestly, the grass is not greener on the other side but different. If you have done your research, then go and have fun. Enjoy what Australia has to offer but also have backup plans should things not work out. You certainly dont want to be in a foreign country with no means of going home. I have a a classmate of mine. His family loved it here. The sun, house near the beach, more time with his family, etc .... However, there are certain things you won't find out until you're part of the fabric of society here. So be forewarned. |
Re: Contemplating moving to Australia...
These days people rarely move to another country for the rest of their lives (especially if young) so maybe the OP should just see it a chance to live and work in Australia for a while and see where life takes them.

Re: Contemplating moving to Australia...
In general I reckon anybody with more than 10,000 posts on here either has no life or takes themselves and their opinions far too seriously.
Been here just over 18 months in Brisbane, two hottest years on record, the a/c wasn't running much through the summer, we still got out and about and enjoy it. It is expensive but you won't be living on bread and water. I spend more time with my family than I imagined possible. This is the first time I've been in here in months, lo and behold the same faces, same opinions ZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzz. Good luck whatever you decide. |

The world has changed a lot in the 40 yrs since I was a dreamer,it will change a lot in the coming 40 yrs. Some friends have died, most have struggled as industry closed in the north east,a tory MP in the 19 80's said his party were doing all they could to ease the pain. They were trying to get a tea bag factory to be built in Cramlington. He was sure all those people that built ships would rise to the challenge of building tea bags. Now I'm a retired multi millionaire, still have the fire in the belly that drove me,slightly quenched but still there. All my dreams came true and some. Sod what everybody else thinks, get some fire in your belly and go for it.I would hate to die wondering,if only, what if.Information overload means you freeze, don't freeze.Never forget the other mans grass is greener only because he put more work in to get it like that. Go for it. Geordie downunder |

OK guys, intermission is over, lets dump the personal stuff and get back on topic for the OP.....
Why do these threads always boil back to Brisbane and on the odd occasion, Adelaide. Surely the writing is on the wall for Brisbane and Adelaide. |

Re: Contemplating moving to Australia...
Hi Drudd,
I don't live in Australia anymore. I lived there along time ago, moved back to the UK, went back to Oz 6 years ago to organise our relocate and decided that Australia wan't for me. When I was 25 living there, I loved it. At 35, it didn't have enough to pull me back. So we moved to Spain. I like it here for the culture and lifestyle. So really it is horses for courses. If you can you have to do a reccie. I know that's not very helpful, but everyone is looking for something different and so it's difficult for individuals to be either objective or specific. Just for the record, IMO, Melbourne is a far better city that Brisbane. It feels more European whereas Brisbane felt more American. But as I said, thats my opinion, it depends what you're looking for. Good luck. Nic |
