Default Conservatories in Sydney

Hi all,

This is a question on behalf of a work colleague.

Does anyone in Sydney know of a reputable firm that designs/fits conservatories?

They are looking to extend their home, but don't want a full bricks and mortar extension. The idea of a nice sunny conservatory appeals, but they can't find any local suppliers.

Has anybody here had any experiences of this sort of thing?

Cheers...

'Sunny' conservatories don't really work in Sydney - they're too damn hot for most of the year to be of much use, which is why they've never caught on here to the degree they have in the UK.

You'd need to shade the glass from the sun (this is shade it on the outside of the glass) as just having blinds on the inside won't make one iota of difference to the temperature inside, which kind of defeats the object of having a glass-roofed/walled room. Maybe there's a fancy glass they could use to stop the heat from entering? Sounds like a bit too much effort, frankly. They'd be better off getting a proper extension.

Yes, they've tried that - None of the quotes that they have had come anywhere near what they can afford. They just want a bit of extra space to spread out into, but not the expense and building upheaval off a full extension.

I think this is probably their last hope. There are a couple of places that we have found offering conservatories, so I guess they will have a look at those.

Why not just a covered verandah - with roll down sides they can use when it's windy / raining?

You'd think that would go double for up here, especially with the humidity it would just become a hothouse - so I did have to wonder why a house up the road had one built on the back. They built the conservatory as part of the new build, not like Swervos mates who are adding to an existing house, & they even put it overlooking the pool.

Sure enough - they are from the UK .

Oops!

Mind you - if also being from the UK, it was double-glazed, that willl keep a lot of the heat out, and make the aircon more efficient.

Dont think so - they ended up putting solar tinting on it (like you put on cars) to try to keep the heat out .

Our laser-lighted pergola (using the bronze tint) which is practically see-through under direct light would be considered too hot by some - most people mix in with colorbond - but we have built it for winter as well and we like the light then.

In the summer we use shadecloth for the hottest months and get the best of both worlds.
