Question about shipping our car ....
Hi everyone
Having read lots of posts advising not to ship out your car, we decided to try and sell the car before flying out to Oz at the end of January. Unfortunately we've had no interest - probably due to the time of the year. As a last resort we looked at selling direct to one of the local garages who offered us £3,000 less than what the car is worth.
As a result we've been doing our maths and on paper it looks as though it would be worthwhile taking the car rather than accepting such a low price.
The figures I've come up with are as follows but I just want to make sure I haven't overlooked any other costs/charges/taxes etc.
£1,600.00 Additional container cost (increase from 20ft to 40ft)
£ 240.00 Cargo insurance - 3%
£1,599.50 Customs Duty @ 10% of the purchase price of car
£1,599.50 GST Tax @ 10% of the purchase price of the car
----------
£5,039.00
========
Compared to:
£3,000.00 Loss on price of car
£4,000.00 Added to UK car sale monies to purchase similar car in Oz
£ 600.00 One month's hire car in the UK
----------
£7,600.00
========
Looking at these figures it looks as though it would pay us to ship the car out (Hyundai Santa Fe). Are there any other costs re shipping which I've overlooked? Sure there is more .....
Advice and guidance would be appreciated.
Many thanks.

You are mental - I cant find a hyundai santa fe for more than 17K$ on carsales.com.au
17K$ is 7k pounds...
Put the car on ebay or find a better dealer to sell it to or a friend to sell it for.
You also forgot to account for car hire this end whilst its clearing customs/getting approval etc.

Hi,
How is the "purchase price calculated"...I ask because I have a Rover 75 turbo...yeah yeah I know... should have been GBP 17995, got it on a deal for GBP9995.
The tax man calculated on the book price to inflict a big bill on me- saying that the deal price was of no concern. This was to prevent those with mates in the business fiddling an invoice apparently!
So would I face 10% of the list price or the purchase price?

Re: Question about shipping our car ....
I half considered shipping my car which was a fairly new honda s2000 but the sums just don't add up. Shipping insurance and GST etc. time without car due to shipping (rental in oz). I could buy a brand new one. There certainly wasn't an as much of a difference on nearly new cars and this is a more expensive car.
I sold it prvetly and now have civic as a run around for 3 months, you can pick up reasonable cars for less than £600 and you can sell them easily after.
Have you tried other motor traders, shopping around can help to get a reasonable sale price (most will offer across the phone), this will give you an idea of the real value of the vehicle. Consider auctions also, you can get good money. Also remember that the price you see in car guides like parkers is usually a guide it is not neccesarily what you will achieve, if your car is truly (a1), few are, try and achieve with in 10% of a1. I would expect a dealer to give me approx £1800 ~ £1000 less than private, they have to stock and warranty it and make money on it.

Also bear in mind that your own private import will probably cost more to insure on an annual basis than an Australian bought car. This is a cost that could inconvenience you for years.
The general advice is - don't ship a readily available car.

Of course adding to the general reasons - impact to resale value....
would you pay the same for a privately imported car ? or buy one that was imported by the manufacturer for the same $? of course not - so there will be a resale impact as well.

Re: Question about shipping our car ....
Thanks everyone for your comments. Really useful. I've decided to visit our local garages to see if I can sell to them direct. If not we've decided to leave with my sister to sell privately later in the new year.
Once again many thanks for all your help - definitely helps to clarify things with lots of input.
Many thanks
