Re: Clothes Woes
It is possible that the explanation lies within the confines of chemistry.
The basic mix for making the pegs will be the same but there will be different additives to give the various colours. I suppose it could be that the additive used to give the blue colour chemically degrades the mix and gives a weaker or more brittle peg. Maybe it degrades it's UV stability. Sounds plausible eh ? ;) |
Re: Clothes Woes
Erm, my pegs always exploded in the UK, but my Aus bought ones are fine. I've just been leaving them on the line, in the sun as I haven't found a nice peg bag yet (eek, don't I sound domesticated, I'm beginning to scare myself). We have red, blue and white, all made in Aus... probably bought them in Coles?
My theory would be that in time the white ones will be less prone to break as they reflect the light and heat. (Wooden ones are also good, but get a bit skanky.) To avoid peg marks, maybe buy some which don't have huge grip marks? |

I think I just drowned then:D
Hey Larissa, if the pegs don't have grippers surely that's defeating the object. They just become sticks. |

Tells me if I use nicely covered wooden coathangers, it stops my clothes getting splinters in them....errr....that why I've used plastic for the last 20 years! |

Re: Clothes Woes
Think I will be bringing my frontloader with me after all!!! When I stayed at my husbands Aunts house in Brisbane last year I loved the toploader because it was so quick - I do remember my clothes coming out feeling 'heavy' with the detergent though. don't remember holes in my clothes :p
Is there such a thing as a good toploader!!? :D Lynn |
Re: Clothes Woes
Hi
Awake now - been dreaming of pegs all night...I think BIX has got it right here re the chemicals in the peg. I guess it's the same generally with clothes - I have t-shirts that've had the same number of washes and only the white ones lose their shape completely probably because the colours also fix the shape? Moral of the story for anyone not in Oz - Don't buy blue pegs! You could always remove them from the packet in the shop and earn yourself a discount? - pegs always seem to come in a variety of colours ...why can't we just choose the colour we want? - probably so they can palm the faulty blue ones off to unsuspecting poms that's why! So now you know, don't say you weren't told :D |

Something I do in my spare time. :D I don't really have enough time to devote to it. :D |
Re: Clothes Woes
Our Blue pegs are perfectly OK, it's the yellow and green that fade and break up. But then we have Dark Blue pegs, and they were about twice the price of the others, maybe they have the better chemicals :D

Re: Clothes Woes
The Bloke said blue is certainly the most brittle colour for pegs....then he went off muttering about how come he married an idiot who sits up till 1.30 am discussing clothes pegs.......

The result is far less if any ironing (since I've lived over here I rarely iron anything)! I can remember the days back in the UK when I knew people who would get up at 5am just to spend 2 hours ironing!! As for the misconception that everything smells better after being hung out in the open air, what a load of rubbish. As I don't live in Australia I cant comment on the Australian mentality of 'pegging out' , although my brother has lived in Perth for the last two years and I know for a fact that him and his wife still 'peg' out the washing. Forget the fact that the sun is shining and being tempted by 'saving money' its a false economy. Good luck with your new wardrobe :) Someone finally said what I've always thought. Load of crap pegging out the wash!! |
