Clear this one up for me ?
Hi all,
Jill and I have been having a debate after the reent threads about wooden bits and bobs etc.
After binning all the pine cones from the Xmas decs our attention has landed on our sofa , yes I know its not that exciting but could anyone give some guidance - I have looked at the Ozzie Quarentine site someone kindly linked on the site but to no avail.
You see our sofa'r cushions etc are feather filled and I don't really want to leave it in the UK as it was a tad expensive, however Jill reckons it will be knocked back by customs. Surely as long as we declare it we'll be ok ??
Also, what about duvets and pillows etc (Jill is also worried about a Puffa jecket which is duk down filled )
Help please ??

PS: Jill has an alternative motive (like all good women) in that she wants a new one anyway !!! I'm taking the tack that we take everything with us if we can !!!!

Warren,
Sorry, can't give you a specific answer to your question (that may come from someone else soon....)
But... when John Mason sent their bloke round to estimate volume we found very him knowledgeable about what was/wasn't allowed by the Aussie authorities (well, at least confidently said 'yes'/'no' to items, and gave explanations as to why).
We changed our mind about a few things (mainly furniture) because of his visit.
My only point is perhaps you could contact firms earlier than you'd previously planned with a view to getting advice.

Don't know about feathers, though I would imagine they're OK as stuffing, cos they'd have been treated. Just make sure you declare them on the form where it says "feathers, fur etc."
Ordinary duvets and pillows aren't a problem.
Declare the wooden stuff and as long as its treated you're OK. I was told definitely no wicker, and pine cones are the well-known "no-no"
Mason's should know, they bring enough stuff over, so I'd ask them about any doubtful item.

We brought feather filled duvets & pillows with us with no problems. As for the wood, the only thing they were even the slightest bit interested in from our container load was an old antique trunk which had (very obvious) signs of woodworm. They treated that & the rest wasnt a problem! (we had a lot of wooden furniture, probably more than your average household).
As others have suggested, the movers will also advise you.

Mrs DB,
Would you say not to take old wood with woodworm holes? I have some pieces that don't have worms residing presently but have done at some point!! How much did they charge for treating it?

I guess it depends on how much you like/want the piece, we brought ours, it was only an old trunk, but we liked it (we have about 4 of them). As long as it doesnt have current infestation it will be ok, they just inspected & treated ours, Im not sure on the price, but I seem to recall an amount of about $100? But I think that that may have been for the trunk, Dagboys bike & something else (cant remember what now) to all be treated? Dont quote me, but I think that was how much it cost.
It certainly wasnt a fortune & if I were to ship stuff over again with old woodworm damage I would do it without much second thought, especially if it were something that I enjoyed owning.
Sandra, cant help with the leather really, but I dont see that there would be a big problem as long as its treated (like a leather jacket?).

Hi Warren,
Luckily we have our very own removal specialist on this site. Mr Mover lives in Adelaide and has answered loads of questions for us in the past. We have had a few removal companies giving us quotes and none of them have mention cushions or pillow. All they said was that we couldn't take some whicker boxes which isn't a problem. We've got loads of wooden nick-nacks, having travelled round Africa, and all should be fine.
Steve.

Year ago we had stuff shipped out to Oz packed in what looked like wood shaving stuff. Boxes sat in the attic for years, only just recently spread it all over the garden to rot down. Plants still thriving.
