For example, if on an annual salary of 30,000GBP then actual gross for nine of 12 months is 22,500GBP.
The tax you should have paid for the year is based on the 22,500. You would have overpaid as you have paid 9/12 of the annual tax on 30,000.
I haven't double checked the numbers - but on a 30,000 you would have paid 3,985 in tax over nine months. Actual earnings at 22,500 for the entire tax year would mean tax of 3,664 for the year. Tax refund is 3,985-3,664.
If you have been 40% marginal tax rate you'll be even better off as part of your income will have been taxed at 40% when it should only have been taxed at 22%.
