Any advice on whether I should stock up on basics from H&M - are there many good value and reasonable quality clothes shops for young girls (mine are 3 & 2).

Melbourne in fact the whole of Oz is missing the good things like the UK in terms of choice, and quality. Dont think it will be cheaper here either as we did when we moved from the UK in August - its not. The cost of living in Melbourne is the same as the UK. Dont be mislead as we were.
My advice is to get along to a McArthur Glen shopping village - In Wales or Swindon before you head out. And have a great trip - melbourne is a nice city compared to Bristol, Best wishes!

K-MART and Target seem to have quite a good range of childrens clothes, mine are 2 and 4, very reasonably priced as well. I am missing Next as well though, used to spend a fortune every year stocking up on all their basics from the catalogue.

Plenty of markets around, t shirts etc for $5.
After all at that age they will have outgrown them within a year.

Try also PumpkinPatch (see http://www.pumpkinpatch.com.au/) - our little boy lived in Pumpkin Patch clothes (and so did most of the neighbours) from age 2 to 4.

Just as an FYI
You probably would not be able to sell them under the name next there is a shop in melbourne (fitzroy) called that and they sell clothing under the name and their trademark looks identical to the UK next.
