Default Children & Nationality

Hi everyone - 1st post so go easy :-)

My wife and I are Perm. Residents (been here in Sydney for 6 years) but not yet Aussie Citizens. We recently had twins and I'd like to pick anyones brains out there that might have any knowledge of what the kids Citizenship status is.

My understanding is that the kids have citizenship rights by birth in Australia but does anyone know what the story is with regards to the UK? The ideal scenario would be if they have automatic rights to UK Citizenship as well.

Any help greatly appreciated!

Hi hawk,
I have 2 sons born in Scotland and 2 in Australia. The 2 born in Scotland have to apply for Australian citizenship but the 2 born in Australian have automatic Australian citizenship and also have UK citizenship because of parentage. My Australian born sons were included on my British passport until they were old enough to have their own. Now have Australian and UK passports.

Your children are Australian citizens (born in Australia to PR parents). As their Aus birth certs don't prove their citizenship, you may want to get them Aus citizenship certs as well as passports (the fee is something like AUD55):

They are also most likely British citizens by descent automatically (assuming at least one of you is born or naturalised in the UK). I'd suggest getting them British passports. Also read this page to understand the implications of being British 'by descent'
http://www.ind.homeoffice.gov.uk/ind...tizenship.html

You may want to complete the loop by sorting out your own Australian citizenship
