hmm... none of the pubs I'm talking about have pokies, so I think that might be a myth being perpetuated over at your end. The high prices are probably just supply and demand, with a little bit of price collusion thrown in for good measure.

The question should really be:

Decent beer in Oz, does it exist?

Is that the case for the whole of Australia?

Also in Perth, where the best place to buy some?
Beer in Britain is way too cheap, as is all alcohol. Australia has a more realistic price for alcohol, as does the US. It's not that bad - you'll get six good bottles of beer for $15 if you go to the right store, and a good bottle of wine can be bought for as little as $5. I have even seen cheap wine at $3.

What will knock you down though is the price of good whisky. I hope you are not a single malt man because if you are you're in for a real surprise!

Decent beer in the UK, does it exist?

I'm sure I heard that Fosters is the most popular beer in the UK which has amazed every Australian I've mentioned it to.

That's because you are probably telling them porkies. I'm pretty sure that's it's Carling and not Fosters.

As usual, it takes a while to find the places. RSL's and Leagues Clubs have cheap beer (bit like British Legion clubs but with decent food and entertainment). Just like in London, bars in CBD will charge higher than suburbs but there are bargains to find if you follow the 'Happy Hour Trail'!!
For example, this weekend, we are watching the NZ v Ireland and England v Australia rugby matches in Scruffy Murphys (never a more apt name!!) on Goulbuorn St in the CBD, pitchers of XXX Gold beer (could be shite but hey, my palate is dead now anyway!) for $7, each pitcher holds 3 schooners...so not a bad price.
