It's because there's no pokies allowed anywhere but the casino, so they don't subsidise the price of beer. Or that's supposed to be the reason why a pub beer is generally cheaper in the Eastern States than WA. Either way it's nicer to not have huge halls of pokie machines and the type of people they attract.

What will knock you down though is the price of good whisky. I hope you are not a single malt man because if you are you're in for a real surprise!

For example, this weekend, we are watching the NZ v Ireland and England v Australia rugby matches in Scruffy Murphys (never a more apt name!!) on Goulbuorn St in the CBD, pitchers of XXX Gold beer (could be shite but hey, my palate is dead now anyway!) for $7, each pitcher holds 3 schooners...so not a bad price.
