We are also stuck on this. Was originally going to be Adelaide but now we have a skilled independent visa and it throws up the "where do we go now" question. Will be validating visa in March so are going to have a look at Perth, Adelaide and Brisbane and hopefully will be able to make mind up then. Have ruled out Melbourne as we thought it would be too cold and wet. Could very well be wrong as have never been there but dont want to get even more confused and look there as well.

P.S. Sorry for hijacking your thread ...... given the choice, and having visited both, I'd go for Melbourne - but it's such a personal thing and you really ought to give each a good reccy before deciding :D

At the time we (the wife and i) said nah - we are still set on Brissy (i even have a website Brisbane or bust!!) however, i spent a few minutes yesterday (during work time of course) checking out Melbourne and basically it dont look too bad.

So the real reason for this post is can anyone suggest any decent areas to have a look at, need schools and beaches etc, etc

Cheers all

Sounds to me like you are copying your friends - don't take this as an insult cause its not - but can you not make up your own minds which state to live in? To me the only way to do that is visit both Melbourne and Brisbane (either on a reccie or choose one then check out the other once you have arrived permanently) - surely you wouldn't change your mind on the basis of a few 'over-simplified' comments on differences between Australian states and cities?????! Sure Brisbane is hot/humid, Melbourne generally cooler year round but to me its a lot more complicated than that! Theres jobs to consider, outdoors lifestyle, house prices - there is no right or wrong answer you either love them or hate them but I don't think our opinions count for much - you should check both cities out yourself. Trust your own instincts and don't panic in moving where your friends are going.

The only way you should decide which place to live in is to actually visit the places youselves. You can't tell just from internet research and just because some people say a place is crap or fantastic does'nt mean you will find itr that way also.

No offence taken - i would rather candid and honest opinions.

Being honest i think we will end up in Brisbane but we will always have this nagging doubt if we dont go and at least have a look at Melbourne.

One of the reasons we 'chose' brissy is for the outdoors lifestyle (i want a pool!!) Melbourne as has been mentioned above has a more temperate climate which to be honest doesnt real appeal.

I like the idea of knowing pretty much what the weather will be like, the ability to plan ahead etc.

We intend to do a validation trip as soon as we have the grant, but again being honest realistically what will you see, you'll do the tourist bits (in both cities) look round a few houses (in both cities) go for meals etc, etc, visiting on holiday wont get you to scratch the surface. I think we'll just end up going to Sydney for a week ot two, then fly up to Brisbane for another couple of weeks and actually scope out areas to live.

Thanks for your thoughts though !

We were orginally were planning on going to Brisbane but then we had trouble getting our visa's the only chance for us to get to Oz was via State nomination (Victoria) we have been in Melbourne for nearly a year and its a great place to live has everything you could want.We have too small children and we are spolit for choice of places to go at weekend. We are off to Gold coast Saturday for a week and are really looking foward to it but for us I think Melbourne was the better option. The weather is a big factor because I acutally like the fact that we get four seasons but if you like the heat all year round maybe Melbourne is not for you.

We could not afford to do a reccy trip so we chose the suburb we have settled in pretty much by the information I found on various website and we couldn't have picked a nicer area.We are five minutes from the beach, train station, great schools and about 50 mintues from the city.

Hope this helps

!

I live in Melbourne and have a pool, as do hundreds of other people. We use ours Between November and April and its warm enough (it does have solar heating for 3 of those months)

I get a little concerned though when people talk about the outdoor lifestyle, meaning heat?? If this is the case its not for me as i loathe putting factor 30 on all over just to go outside for 3 months let alone 6.

I have lived in WA and know now from experience that i prefer 3 cooler, wetter months where you put a fleece and maybe a scarf on as opposed to 3 scorching months where you fry if you want to go outside between 10am and 3pm. (I know Brisbane is different due to humidity therefore greeness etc) but i like seasons and a wet and a dry just don't rock my boat:))

Anyway, good luck with whatever you decide:)
