Changing our mind.....

Morning/afternoon* all,

Well we had friends down on the weekend, they are the ones who put this idea in our minds in the first place, right down to suggesting that Brisbane is the place to settle.

Anyway they now have decided that Melbourne is the place to be. At the time we (the wife and i) said nah - we are still set on Brissy (i even have a website Brisbane or bust!!) however, i spent a few minutes yesterday (during work time of course) checking out Melbourne and basically it dont look too bad.

So the real reason for this post is can anyone suggest any decent areas to have a look at, need schools and beaches etc, etc

Cheers all

LOL - sounds just like us a few months ago! We were all set on going to Adelaide until we were able to go 136, then I kept thinking "I like the idea of WA" until I finally started researching and was totally sold!

Are you able to visit both before you get settled?

We were similar. Originally it was Adelaide for us. Got our Visas and had to validate. Had friends in Sydney and then decided to check out Brisbane. Fell in love with the place that we never ended up visiting Adelaide. So Brisbane for us. Hope you find some info. Sorry couldn't help with Melbourne.

Cheers

I just came across this site and saw this thread i even signed up just to tell you, mate dont go to Brisbane in a word it's crap.

I have friends up there one owns a bar couple work in IT the only reason there there is they landed good jobs, but they all want to transfer to other cities in Oz as soon as poss. I live two hours south of Brisbane, Ive been up there a few times to see friends and to be honest its just boring.

Melbourne has so much more going for it, culture, things to do all round great city, your kids will thank you for the change of mind, though weather wise you can get four seasons in one day.i dont like cities but if there was one i had to live in it would be Melbourne. hour away get on the great oceon road you have Torquay and further down bells beach great for a surf though the water is cold.
I personaly live in Byron Bay on the east coast and i love it, great vibe, lovely beaches, sunny days and good surf but downside gets busy for a little coastal town.
anyway thats my two cents good luck with it all...

It's not so much that we have changed our minds more over that we have had another suggestion whispered in our ear and like a buzzing little mosquito we now 'have' to consider it!!

I have been looking on the various real estate websites to see if there is a marked difference with house prices to be honest it seems that Brisbane area (Inc Gold Coast and Sinshine Coast) seem to be cheaper - although not knowing the areas i could be comparing apples with grapefruit, plus i like the idea of having lots of sunshine although the draw back with that is a chuffing hot summer (sits back and waits for the whinging pom comments....)

We also considered Perth but both agreed it was too far away from anything - nice city as it is though.

i have been thinking long and hard this afternoon (whilst avoiding the hoovering) and it occurred to me that we (either before we had the children or now we have them) have lived in Minehead Somerset and now Torquay Devon which are both holiday resorts so quite why we are shying away from the Gold Coast is beyond me!!!!! also, if i could stand the heat, i think i would opt for cairns but i think the heat might be a killer up there  i like the idea of Perth because housing is cheaper but like you say, could be comparing an apple to a grapefruit for all we know!?!?! there are also heaps more jobs for my husband in Brisbane so i think we have to concentrate on that area really. i remember having a conversation with a forum member who said there wasn't much call for outdoor pools in Melbourne and that put me off slightly

anyway Ive said enough to get myself shot down in flames already!!!! over to you!! :D

That's kind of how we felt when we realised we had the option to go where we wanted. Although we were keen on Adelaide and would have been more than happy to go there, suddenly there were all these options.

We decided against QLD mainly due to the humidity, BUT we will definitely be visiting other places once we're sorted as you never know....

That's the Catholics for you. They knocked down my school (which had existed in one form or another for about a 1000 bloody years) and merged it with the girls Catholic school, because it was sat on prime development land. Nowt to show for my secondary school education but a shit-load of identical and nasty Wimpy homes.

P.S. Sorry for hijacking your thread ...... given the choice, and having visited both, I'd go for Melbourne - but it's such a personal thing and you really ought to give each a good reccy before deciding :D

We are also stuck on this. Was originally going to be Adelaide but now we have a skilled independent visa and it throws up the "where do we go now" question. Will be validating visa in March so are going to have a look at Perth, Adelaide and Brisbane and hopefully will be able to make mind up then. Have ruled out Melbourne as we thought it would be too cold and wet. Could very well be wrong as have never been there but dont want to get even more confused and look there as well.

Sounds to me like you are copying your friends - don't take this as an insult cause its not - but can you not make up your own minds which state to live in? To me the only way to do that is visit both Melbourne and Brisbane (either on a reccie or choose one then check out the other once you have arrived permanently) - surely you wouldn't change your mind on the basis of a few 'over-simplified' comments on differences between Australian states and cities?????! Sure Brisbane is hot/humid, Melbourne generally cooler year round but to me its a lot more complicated than that! Theres jobs to consider, outdoors lifestyle, house prices - there is no right or wrong answer you either love them or hate them but I don't think our opinions count for much - you should check both cities out yourself. Trust your own instincts and don't panic in moving where your friends are going.

The only way you should decide which place to live in is to actually visit the places youselves. You can't tell just from internet research and just because some people say a place is crap or fantastic does'nt mean you will find itr that way also.

No offence taken - i would rather candid and honest opinions.

Being honest i think we will end up in Brisbane but we will always have this nagging doubt if we dont go and at least have a look at Melbourne.

One of the reasons we 'chose' brissy is for the outdoors lifestyle (i want a pool!!) Melbourne as has been mentioned above has a more temperate climate which to be honest doesnt real appeal.

I like the idea of knowing pretty much what the weather will be like, the ability to plan ahead etc.

We intend to do a validation trip as soon as we have the grant, but again being honest realistically what will you see, you'll do the tourist bits (in both cities) look round a few houses (in both cities) go for meals etc, etc, visiting on holiday wont get you to scratch the surface. I think we'll just end up going to Sydney for a week ot two, then fly up to Brisbane for another couple of weeks and actually scope out areas to live.

Thanks for your thoughts though !

We were orginally were planning on going to Brisbane but then we had trouble getting our visa's the only chance for us to get to Oz was via State nomination (Victoria) we have been in Melbourne for nearly a year and its a great place to live has everything you could want.We have too small children and we are spolit for choice of places to go at weekend. We are off to Gold coast Saturday for a week and are really looking foward to it but for us I think Melbourne was the better option. The weather is a big factor because I acutally like the fact that we get four seasons but if you like the heat all year round maybe Melbourne is not for you.

We could not afford to do a reccy trip so we chose the suburb we have settled in pretty much by the information I found on various website and we couldn't have picked a nicer area.We are five minutes from the beach, train station, great schools and about 50 mintues from the city.

Hope this helps

!

I live in Melbourne and have a pool, as do hundreds of other people. We use ours Between November and April and its warm enough (it does have solar heating for 3 of those months)

I get a little concerned though when people talk about the outdoor lifestyle, meaning heat?? If this is the case its not for me as i loathe putting factor 30 on all over just to go outside for 3 months let alone 6.

I have lived in WA and know now from experience that i prefer 3 cooler, wetter months where you put a fleece and maybe a scarf on as opposed to 3 scorching months where you fry if you want to go outside between 10am and 3pm. (I know Brisbane is different due to humidity therefore greeness etc) but i like seasons and a wet and a dry just don't rock my boat:))

Anyway, good luck with whatever you decide:)

Hi - we're from Hanham.. We started off thinking about Brisbane (though without much research). However, once we passed the TRA we researched more thoroughly and decided on Melbourne. Thought likes Hevs about the climate + the fact of nearby skiing (of some sort). Also plenty of printing companies for husband's work (hopefully). Continued searching and found more and more we liked about the city. Obviously we won't know for sure until we live there :)

Our pool, in Melly, is not heated, and we used it between December and March. I don't think it was ready prior to that.

It is normally about 20c. I don't swim in it less than that.
