Default Changing employers on a 457 Visa

I'm about to do this and the employer is going to sponsor me for PR. However, I understand if I resign on a 457 I have 28 days to leave the country.

Presumably PR will take some time to arrange, even ENS, so what happens in the transistion period?

Do I end with a bridging visa?
Does my current 457 visa get cancelled?

It's a bit worrying if so in the event that PR was not forthcoming for whatever reason would I be visa-less or can I keep my 457 whcih is due to expire in Sep 06.

In the event that the PR wasn't forthcoming , I reckon after 12 months with new employer I could more easily get PR based on the 2 year rule, with 1 year with sponsoring employer.

It would be better to post something like this on the immigration forum. Basically what you intend to do (get sponsored for PR by a new employer) is complex and you need good professional advice from an agent specialising in this area so as not to end up in a visa mess.

Since we're getting into personal stuff, are you a UK immigration agent as well as an (I'm assuming) Australian immigration agent? I'm blown away by the fact that you know so much about both Australia & the UK's immigration policies (and you even seem to know loads about other countries as well, but I don't follow those newsgroups!)
