Posts like this fill me with terror! A year and still struggling for work. God I feel faint now. If I tell Dale this he'll have a heart attack!

Yep that's our biggest worry the work thing. Dale says he knows once he gets a job he'll be able to keep it, it's the getting bit that worries him. As you know he hasn't got the gift of the gab - he can't talk a good job but he can do a damn good job.

There is so much building going on in North Brisbane at the moment I can't believe a chippy would have problems getting work. When I leave for work every morning at 6.30am there is a sh** load of tradies coming in to North Lakes.

Yes but dont forget sh** loads of tradesmen have arrived the last 2 years.
There jobs around but getting a start against blokes who have the OZ experience is the tricky part. OP should try and get on a site as anything - labourer etc to get some contacts, know the aussie method of doing things, know how to get the job signed off to the aussie building regs.

Most chippies get work by forming a licenced gang and then constantly submit quotes for work, hoping to pick up enough builders to string some sort of continuity of work. Biggest thing they are looking for is the gangs ability to get on the job and not only get it up quickly but to pass the building inspections without a hitch, knowledge of the aussie rules and regs is only really picked up by experience, I know catch 22. Very few carpenters are employed on wages as in a job, its all subcontracting and quoting.

He'll do anything to be honest..he can't bear to be out of work and he's never taken a day of sick..ever. Think that's what makes it so stressful about the big move, it'd kill him to be out of work
