Default Career change to personal training in Melbourne

I am in the process of applying for a subclass 190 permanent migration visa , my profession of chemist is on the CSOL. I don't love my job and the pay is quite modest in Australia compared to other professions. What I am very interested in is exercise and nutrition, my knowledge in this area is vast. I was wondering what the prospects are for a career change in personal training in Melbourne, what kind of salary is on offer. I would even consider doing it part-time along with a chemist job at the beginning

It's an area I know a fair bit about, as my daughter has her own very successful business doing this..... She's well into a 6 figure income already and her partner who is an industrial FIFO electrician on very high wages has his PT ticket and is considering joining her.... I dont think he should and the reasons will follow.

Let me start by saying for every 5 PT's out there only one would make a proper career out of it. You can be as dedicated, knowledgeable, educated and professional as the best but you have to have one untrainable trait....The right charismatic Personality. You'll know if you have that yourself already.

There are heaps of PT's in Melbourne, some just go through the motions set up business in gyms on low wages and sometimes have to rent gym time themselves.especially if they start to become successful. Most give it away after 18 months to 2 years.

My Daughter specialises in PCOS and is probably the top PT person in Victoria in this field already, she never stops going on courses and the course she got the best value from was Business Mentoring.

My wife is considering doing her PT training course as well, She would probably do well at it as she has a magnetic personality herself and has worked for years motivating people in her role as a Pyschiatric nurse and bonus would appeal to the over 50's ladies and mens.... so motivation is a natural part of her character.

The other aspect is you have to be so well up on nutrition and all that goes along with that, things seemingly change direction in this field every few years, so you have to be on the right train.

Right now the following is the pinnacle of PT training gyms in Melbourne. It has in house doctors, specialist PT people and yoga training. My wife goes to this one, reason being they are attempting to change her metabolism from a naturally high cholesterol reading so as to avoid statins... They've had blood tests the likes of which I've never seen and stool samples from her, so you can see where the high end PT gyms go. Statins are very frowned about in the PT community in Melbourne at present.

I think you'd be better off training to be an Exercise Physiologist if exercise, nutrition and job stability are important. You can always do some personal training part time.

That's a brilliant post OE. We've had 3 or 4 members in our club (tennis, squash, racketball, table tennis and fitness in one club) ask our committee permission to operate PT on a one to one and class basis in our club. You are right to highlight the personality/motivation/charisma (or whatever you call it) factor. None of these has made a go of it in our club; they have all the qualifications but they are a little or a lot lacking in this quality!
