Unhappy car shipping Q?

Hi all, we are looking in to shipping our car (still) and we have come to an abrupt halt.
We have a ford sierra sapphire that we have put alot of time and money in to make it in to a Cosworth replica and it is of extreme sentimental value to my hubby as he's lived his dream and done most of the work himself Practically everything is less than 5 years old, we bought it as a bog standard sierra back in 2000 as a non runner.
Everywhere we look for info refers us to redbook.com.au to get a valuation, only our car isn't listed.
We e-mailed them to find out how to go about obtaining a valuation and they said:

"We do not list your vehicle as we do not cater for private import vehicles.
That particular vehicle would be worth more in the UK than it would be here as demand here would be extemely limited.
In our experience it would be better to sell in UK and then purchase a local car here."

This is what we really don't want to do. On top of the sentimental value the car is in showroom condition and is unbelievably reliable. My hubby is able to fix everything that goes wrong with it so repairs aren't a problem, we have also got spare everything should something go wrong.

We e-mailed them back to see if we could use mondeos as a guide to the value as sierras predesses them.
They replied:

"The Mondeo replaced the Sierra but not really the equivalent. Not sure about the specifications. The Mondeo was built in Germany and maybe the Sierra's were to. The value could be the same. A bit difficult to price as we do not have the Sierra's."

Where do we go from here, we really don't want to leave it behind but on the same token if it can't go what choice do we have?

Any help or ideas thanked for in advance.
Marie

Cool Re: car shipping Q?

Hi Marie,

I've been trudging through the process of getting two of my scooters exported.
For one of them (a 1978 Lambretta - sentimental reasons too!) I have to get a customs value assessed as its too old to go on original price less depreciation etc.

When I e-mailed the Oz Customs people on how and where to get a value, they sent me a list of 'approved' assessors who they'd accept a value from based on a description rather than a physical inspection. The companies are generally throughout Oz.
I had a patchy response to the few that I could get e-mail addresses for so in the end I wrote to all of them.

I did eventually get a response that is a little better than the usual 'oh I don't really now, probably about $1000 - $5000' kind of thing from RAC of Tasmania of all people, but you will probably have to have a go at all of them.

There is an enquiries e-mail address on the Oz customs website and I have found them very prompt and good at answering my queries (keeping all the responses so I can wave them in front of the customs men when I finally get there!) The Oz customs website is at www.customs.gov.au.

By the way, before you can export any vehicle you will also have to apply for 'Permission to Import' (form VSB10) from the Oz road safety people. The forms and info are available at the DOTAR website - www.dotars.gov.au.

From what I've read on this and other forums exporting cars into Oz is an expensive and complicated business (just check out the various taxes and duties you have to pay!!). Apparently there is a specialist car shipper 'Karman' or something similar that have a lot of experience in shipping cars, if you have a hunt around the forum there will be a link to their website.

Best of luck,
Scooterpom.

Thanks Scooterpom,
I've got all the relevant forms and stuff and I know exactly what I'm doing and how to work out the cost of it all, it's just this damn valuation that's causing problems. Karmenshipping have got info on everything but again, not our car.
I'm going to take your advice and contact customs to get a list of approved assessors like you did and contact them all. It sounds like the only way to go.
God only knows why they don't list Sierras when they do list Cortinas (which came before) and Mondeos (which came after).
Hopefully I'll be able to get omewhere now.
