Default car insurance?

can anyone put us on to a good car insurance company in oz.
little chris has just bought a nissan x-trail and she wants to get fully comp before she picks it up tomorrow.
we could also do with getting breakdown cover if anyone knows the australian equivalent of the AA.

cheers jonni

The catch is here: "Your insurance will be underwritten by Southern Rock Insurance Company Limited, (SRICL) Gibraltar, a direct off shore foreign insurer, who is not required to be authorised under the Insurance Act 1973 to conduct business in Australia and therefore not subject to the provisions of the Act." (The quote is taken from their Product Disclosure Statement on their web site.)

In other words: If you have a claim and they don't pay out, you can complain but you you won't get much joy.

And you *did* read their exclusion sections in the Product Disclosure Statement, right?

Shannons have been way cheaper for me than either RACV, AAMI or GIO.

Call this number and ask for Matt 1800746759

We bought a 4 yr old Honda CRV Sport and got Full Comprehensive insurance for $920 this included a few extra things like no Excess for Glass amongst others. the original Quote was for $850 and this covers myself 38 and partner who is 26. we had no paperwork from the UK to help with the NCB and he was fine with that, i beleive we did get the 60% NCB from him as every other quote i got was around the $1700 mark. i did mention that if there are more expats that need insurance i would pass on his number. if you mention John from Coogee gave you the number.

The unerwriters for the insurance is QBE

let us know how you get on if you use them or not

Dont know what state your in... but we're in WA and we use SGIO for our car and home insurance, you get 10% off all the policies. I have personally found them the cheapest and have heard good things about them from people who've needed to claim.

I was with RAC for breakdown, but just bought a CRV and it comes with 3 years breakdown cover so dont need it anymore.

thanks everybody and in the end we went with budget who worked out $100 plus cheaper than RACQ, but we went with RACQ for the breakdown cover.
fully comp on a 3 year old nissan x-trail was $409 for chris 37 with me as a named driver 36 which is bloody peanuts compared to what you would pay back in blighty!
i need to stop comparing things to back in england but i'm not earning the aussie dollar yet blink:
thats next on my list.....FIND A JOB!

Budget won't quote me with a UK licence on a working visa.

"Unfortunately due to our underwriting criteria we are unable to offer you insurance at the current time."

Don't face the same problem if I change the driving licence type to UK licence + resident visa.

Edit: Just spoke to Budget on the phone, the girl said that a 457 visa is classified as "resident" by them, so select the resident option...!
