I had to read it twice, 7 weeks annual leave? That's very good.

Look, the pay isn't the best, but it also isn't terrible and if your wife is working you will be ok. I also assume super would be on top of that pay amount.

Be coming over with a decent amount so won't struggle at the beginning. The wage is ok and once your wife settles if could be even better.

It also states that it is entry level, so you might even get more based on your experience.

Super is short for Superannuation. It's like a pension investment system here. Your employer must pay 9% into a super fund for you. Some companies pay more and you can also add to it yourself of you like, but by law your employer must pay at least 9% for you. You then get it when you retire.

Very interesting. So my salary would be say $51k, then states with significant allowances. Would I get anything a year on top on that inital salary in $ or would super be part of the significant allowances (wow does that make sense..:confused:)

I don't think they would put super into the "significant allowences" as super isn't an allowance.

I think your pay would be the 51k (or the higher 61k coz of experience) PLUS your 9% super.

I think the "significant allowances" would be, the 7 weeks annual leave they mention and probably other things like maybe a percentage loading rate (working irregular hours), maybe health/dental discounts or Benefits, gym benefits, probably study benefits as they mention that, the option to salary package things... Different things like this, it all depends from company to company.

If I get states sponsorship in ACT I understand I have to work in ACT for 2 years. Do I also have to live in that state and if so is NSW part of ACT (I am guessing not.)

If you get ACT sponsorship then yes you are supposed to live/work in the ACT. But if you can't find a job they won't stop you moving. Also, with ACT being so small I also don't think they would mind if you lived in ACT but worked in the prison in Goulburn (NSW). Or if you worked at the prison in ACT and lived over the border in Yass or queanbeyan for example.

And nope, NSW and ACT are not the same or part of each other. One is a state (NSW) and one is a territory (ACT) so they have their own government, laws, drivers licences, you can buy alcohol in the supermarkets here, in NSW you can't, etc etc.

But because of the size of the ACT and cost, many people work in the ACT and live just over the border in NSW (still just a 20 min commute).

The 2 year requirement is a moral obligation. So technically you can get ACT sponsorship but the day you land you can move and work anywhere in Australia doing anything. Now you will find many on this board (myself included) who are really against this as it takes away the place of someone who really wanted to live in that state - BUT I guess it could be seen differently for ACT as they have lots of jobs on the skills list but there is no way a migrant could do it here - Police Officer for example is oh the ACT list yet to join the Police in ACT you must be a citizen so someone coming on that would have no choice but to move state.

Nice one. So just to clarify. There is a possiblity I could work in Canberra as a correctional officer and live in NSW where the property is more affordable.
I am unsur of the distance I would have to commute from Canberra to NSW though.

Yep it would be fine to live over the border in NSW and work in ACT (I also updated my above post about the 2 year requirement and added a bit).

Queanbeyan is the closest area of NSW - practically like a suburb of Canberra in distance terms. It's a 20 commute to Canberra centre, even a quicker commute to the prison I think. Many, and I really mean many people live in NSW Queanbeyan area simply because of cost and commute into the ACT, driving is quick and easy but there is also public transport into Canberra

Just looked at the prison on the map and yep you would probably be better living in Queanbeyan area, much closer and would have a 10-15 min commute.

Would you recommend any other areas around Queanbeyan area maybe around a 30/40 min drive from the prison. Areas that have very low crime....lol

Does anyone know how Vetassess will go about assessing my skills as a prison officer. It is not like I have a phd they can go by.
