Default Can we claim VAT back on new goods when exporting?

Hello all,

We ship out soon, but need to buy some new things that we will declare on the way in to Oz and pay Oz duty on.

Can we claim the UK duty back somehow? Seems a little unfair to pay it twice.

Has anyone done it? Or can tell me how, or if it is possible?

Thanks.

We phoned the VAT helpline and was told NO! Since we are UK residents, we are not entitled to claim the vat back when exporting new goods in our container.
Will your new goods be obviously new when arriving in Oz? It may be possible to remove the packaging etc and avoid GST.

Hi There

We had our exporters in the other week. They advised that we could purchase some items direct for export and therefore not pay VAT just GST. You would need to have the delivery direct to the shippers and complete a form from the supplier.

Thanks for the replies. It does seem really unfair that you cant just send your receipt off somewhere and claim back the VAT.

The item we wanted to buy is a new vacuum cleaner, which would be obviously new to anyone checking.

I'll see if I can find out how much the same model is over there first.

Thanks.

Paul & Wendy - you wee misinformed

As long as you are leaving the UK for at last 12 months, within 3 months of leaving, anything you buy you can claim the VAT back on.

It's easy enough and you will be surprised (as we were ) the amount of shops that have the tax back dockets under the counter ready for you.

Note, the easiest way to get the tax back is credited to your UK credit card so don't close it off.

It says that you have to have the goods available for inspection when you leave the country, that may be difficult for most things I would think.

I don't think we'll bother trying.

Thanks for the link though.
