What's the situation regarding registering a campervan, or estate car for that matter ?

By the nature of what it's bought for, you aren't going to have a fixed address, like on a UK registration document ??

Buy a Camp 4 book has a great map of Oz, shows all the stop off resting spots and lists all the free spots around Australia. Tells you if there is shower, cooking, shade, large vehicles, toilets, facilities or if dogs are allowed etc one of the best books you could buy if you like camping.

One of the favourite places I thought was a bargain was out at Claremont just a few k's out head for the Theresa Creek Dam costs $5 a night no matter if you have a car load, cooking, toilets, showers etc (nothing to write home about but still it is better than a bush shower), and a large dam to chill next to at night.

if you want to go major off roading check out http://www.exploroz.com/ (although it was down a minute ago!) as there are plenty of people who get together to have a mass convoy to travel across some of the unseen Australia. Which can save your bacon if you haven't got a clue!

I agree with you about prefering camping to hotels.
With camping the rooms are small but check out the gardens!
We are just about to send in our TRA (the longest in history) and
hopefully are heading out to the east coast via a stop in Perth to see
people. Our idea is to pick up a van in Cairns and head down the coast
to Sunshine Coast/North NSW and see where we end up.

There is a wicked caravan park in cairns the only 5 star one in oz. They have an outdoor cinema and when you turn up they take you on a buggy ride to pick your plot. Very plush underfloor heating in bathrooms. I forget what it is called well worth the stay

Some of my best memories are camping in rest stops going up the
Stuart Highway. All alone with a campfire and a beer. Hummm.
One of the wierdest was in Coober Pedy.

We used the Hotel we were staying in as I remember.
I remember using a campsite address for something else.

Not sure how it all works with paperwork, but I know it is common practice for backpackers to buy and sell cars upon arriving and leaving airports in Oz, so registration and all that must be quite a simple easy process compared to the UK?

There is the Kings Cross car sales that happen in the Car Park at Sydney Airport, and this is mainly attended by tourists buying and selling cars off other tourists.

We sold ours at Kings Cross. A truely desperate place.

It is quite simple to do but cant quite remember the process just know WA plated car is the best to have.
Did anyone stay at daley waters whilst camping a wild and wicked place just outside tennant creek. All knickers and bras and weird things stuck on the wall. Always choca block in the camp site. There was a poet there doing poetry with a chicken on his head.
