Us camping would only happen if the 'tent' had solid walls, plumbed in toilet, shower, proper beds with proper mattresses, proper kitchen including dishwasher etc and separated from other 'tents' by 2 acres :lol:

Just wanted to know the following as getting a load of grief back home for having bought a caravan recently, been called all sorts from "Old Farts, to "Gypos" etc etc




I would never in a Million years dreamed of becoming a weekend pikey when we lived in the UK. But we have got the bug for caravanning over here and brought ourselves a new Jayco Eagle Outback Camper Trailer and we love it.

If the Primus dual fuel one is the same as the Coleman one they run on either petrol or their own brand of fuel i.e "Coleman fuel" (shellite) the Coleman one won't run on kero or diesel though. We had a Coleman duel fuel stove & a lantern in the U.K both excellent products & very efficient. One 5 litre jerry can will fuel both a lantern & a stove for a couple of weeks camping with plenty to spare.
As for diesel/multi fuel stoves, one of the boats we had was fitted with a diesel stove it was the dirtiest smelliest means of cooking I've ever had to use. The whole galley took on the smell of diesel as did the food prep surfaces & consequentially the food. NEVER will I have another, bloody awful things:thumbdown: What space you save carrying fuel will more than be taken up with the extra water necessary to remove the stink of the diesel from hands etc.
We've camped quite a bit since we arrived here, we brought our tent from the U.K. Deb splashed out on a dual burner cooker to replace our metho trangia, though I still use the trangia if I go for a night on the beach fishing. I wish I'd brought the Colemans with us but we left them in a rucksack full of other camping gear at Deb's mums.
One thing we learned while camping in QLD is that you really need a large tarp & a few extending poles to erect a shelter over your camp & tent. It makes a huge difference to the temp inside your tent if it's covered with a tarp + it provides shade or shelter from afternoon storms;)

Hi thanks for the tip about the tarp as we did not know if we should bring our tent as some one told me tents in oz have uv protection.

I was really pleased to see this thread. We love camping and were wondering if many people do in Oz. We're festival veterans so used to roughing it a bit - I was just a little concerned about the Australian "wildlife" and weather for sleeping outdoors!!!! How much of a problem are animals/spiders/snakes/heat when camping and do you think we should bring our tent with us or are tents constructed differently over there (eg to cope with heat, animals etc...)?

Just the same as U.K tents, sewn in ground sheets, full fly screens etc. We brought ours & have upgraded to one that Deb can stand up in to put her knickers on:eek: .................................................. .................................................. .........................I'll be in so much trouble for that

After many years of camping all over Aust, i took my wife to Port Lincoln ...we camped on the 5th floor of the new lincoln hotel.........;)mm

Rented camper vans on two visits to Oz.
Found it to be the best part of the trip, especially in National Parks.
When we eventually get over, we will definately be investing in 4x4 and caravan or trailer tent at the least.
Met some great people and had some fantastic memories, even got the Mozzie scars to prove it:rofl:

We went up to Landcruiser Mountain Park on Anzac Day for a bit of a drive and a reccie for future possible camping trip. Have to say I felt like a city slicker, we were driving a Pajero & Prado and looked out of place. It's definately the place for a boys weekend - didn't feel it was particularly family orientated, & thought the fishing holes were crap. Some of the tracks and hills are pretty extreme which our Pajero couldn't handle - most of the 4w'd's looked really "serious" with high suspension, massive wheels etc.

Decided for us to stick to beaches in future!

Re the cooking - we use a 2 ring gas stove and we've recently bought a Webber BabyQ - it's excellent, although it's tiny it cooks stuff so fast you can easily cook for 12 in no time.
