Default buying a new car at the turn of the year

G'day all,

our new car will be at the dealership in a day or two.
It will have a 2005 build date and "compliance plate".

Does waiting till January and first registering it in 2006 have the same significance as back in the UK ? - where you'd definitely wait a couple of weeks to first register in the new year, and then it'd be a 2006 instead of a 2005.

This car will be registered in South Australia.

The dealer says it's the compliance plate year that's used to age cars.

The good thing about Aussie plates is that it does not show the age of the car, that is why there isn't the obsession to have the latest plate every couple of years like in the UK! How many people do you know who spent £7000 on a brand new Corsa (Barina) when they could have spent the same on a 5 yr old BMW or Mercedes.
