Smile buying houses in Melbourne

Could anyone give me some more information about buying your 1st house once you have emigrated? We have heard that you can only buy 'new build' or land for development, and are restricted on buying the older houses.

We hope to get a 5 year permanent resident visa, and would love an older house!

thank you for your help

Ive seen that before Charlotte, it may be true for some states & some visas but if you have permanent residency & are moving to Melbourne then you can buy whatever you like if you have the money.
Nothing stopping you buying an older house.
