Yehp Virgin cannot match that here. Neither can the other telcos.. I'd say the closest would be a 256k unlimited connection for about 50 dollars, which is pathetic in comparison.

Looking at Virgin there, makes me wonder why my father insists on Tiscali.

I use Tiscali here and i'm happy with it, i'm currently hammering my torrent downloads (Ahem!!) before my contract is up, i'm running out of things to download!!
So to compare what i have now, which is 8mb Broadband ( unlimited downloads) which does not include a phone line, what would be the best equivilent in Oz just on the Broadband package??

Uk - 8mb broadband (unlimited downloads) = £18 or about $40
Oz - ??

I would make sure that this hasn't been implemented http://www.news.com.au/couriermail/s...-17102,00.html at the time of your arrival in Australia just in case you are carrying your 'borrowed' Torrent data using any of the technology described within the article?

If your in the habit of downloading movies on Bittorrent, anything less than say 50 gigs of download is going to be a problem. A Movie via Bittorrent usually uses around 700 megs of space, or 3/4's of a gig of download quota. 1 hour on youtube uses around 200 megs of space, or 1/5th of a gig of download quota.

I'm not sure exactly why Australia companies charge for download quota, it could be that geographical location makes the access to the overseas networks aka PIPES, more expensive to use than in Europe and the USA and Asia, or it could be just plain profiteering like our Supermarkets.

In two years time download quotas probably wont be a problem, as companies like DODO and TPG are bringing out unlimited download quota, on high speed broadband. Infrastructure like the following will help this along... http://apcmag.com/australia_to_get_2...cond_cable.htm

BTW most users would use less than 25 gigs of downloads per month.

Yeah it was the same here a few years ago Broadband was so expensive, but then every company started their own Broadband tariffs from Mobile phone companys to Phone stores everyone wants a piece of it, now thats good as the price has gone stupidly low.
But i could keep an eye on downloads if i had to, and limit myself to say even 25gb a month but its a hell of alot easier to not have to worry about that, but eh!! hopefully soon in Oz.

Ok if you download a file from a torrent site like say a Movie which are mostly 700mb in size then once the movie has finished downloading then that has taken 700mb out of your download/upload limit (say you have a 20gb cap) that would leave you with 19.300gb left then after the movie has finished downloading the movie starts uploading so others can get the movie which is called seeding/sharing.
Now you can limit your upload to say 10kb per second which is not much, so depending how long you upload a movie depends on how much upload data you use out of you download/upload limit.

i hope that makes sense to you.

FR2PERTH is an unknown quantity at this point
Default Re: Broadband Prices

Hi, sorry to butt in, but we're moving over shortly as soon as the house sells and we're also interested in services available. HERE in France we get naked or 'un' naked broadband/telecoms for €29.99/month (about A$50). It is your choice if you want a 'land' line (extra €13/month) or not. For that we get 8mb which is more than enough for us but the main thing is that we get TOTALLY free land line phone calls nationally & internationally to more than 25 countries. This has been a great saviour, speaking to relatives in the UK, OZ & elsewhere whenever we want for however long has saved us god knows how much over the last couple of years.

SO WHEN will any OZ broadband provider be able to offer this? Surely the technology is there and available, if one begins then maybe others will follow. Or am I being too hopeful?

Yes IInet do naked, although with download limits around 79 bucks gets you 40 gigs.

Internode also do naked, although they use the Optus network at present so its more costly for the 40 gigs at around 85 bucks.

BTW both of those Naked plans are at Adsl2+ 24 mbps, so three times the speed.

Cheapest Voip available at present that i know of is Pennytel... free DID and 2 cents per minute to overseas

TPG are the download kings they will announce a 500 gig limit shortly.... alas they dont do naked anymore... so a telstra line fee of 30 dollars applies to their rates.
