British Graduate looking for work in Sydney
Hi there,
Having graduated from a good British uni this summer, I'm currently looking into moving over to Sydney next year (Jan or Feb) and working there until October. Initially I think I'll pick up any work I can manage (bar work, construction), but I was wondering if anybody could tell me if it'd be realistic to try and find some graduate-level work at a company in Sydney (sales, marketing, insurance etc.). I'd be open to a wide range of roles in an array of different industries.
Would it be worth contacting a few recruiters a month or so before I leave to introduce myself and explain my situation to them?
Thanks for reading, any help whatsoever is very much appreciated.
Alex

I'll be applying for the Working Holiday VISA soon

Well you would be competing with many Australian new graduates from a severely disadvantaged position. I would say you have little to no chance of securing any kind of graduate role. Stick to plan A and just have some fun.

Not easy, but it's been done many times before from people in your situation. Personally I wouldn't bother with agents until you are physically in Australia and available for work.

What's probably been done before is people who already have some work experience come on a WHV, take a temp/contract position, and if it goes well might lead on to a more substantive visa with employer support.

I agree with BC, you are probably thinking of a WHV holder with work experience, not a fresh graduate.

didn't say it was easy....but its possible.
Also many people who come on the Working Holiday Visa end up staying. Not everyone ends up back home.

I think it depends on the skills of the Graduate, but looking at "sales, marketing, insurance" is not really putting yourself into a niche position. Our company has employed expat grads on Temp positions with the proviso that no permanent job is offered, but, I know of at least two that did get offered a job with us via the 457 route but they did have good engineering/design skills. Its often worth taking the plunge as BS says and just come over anyway and have fun while trying. If you get a break then take it, but be prepared to just enjoy a year of bar work/fruit picking
