Mind you, given the current ignorance and misunderstanding that surrounds the subject, it occurs to me that, if I'd told the local NHS I was an 'asylum seeker's' child, I might have got more prompt treatment for my asthma

I agree with your general thrust - most people are lousy managers. And consultants can be some of the worst (no, I'm not joking). People think that by giving someone the title 'manager' makes that person an effective manager (let's not even use the word 'good') - it doesn't. Most management is about managing relationships. And given that 40%+ of marriages end in divorce, why should anybody be surprised about crap performance in the workplace?
Still, it's not all bad. If most managers were any good, we wouldn't have 'The Office' or Dilbert...

on this issue. Its no safer here, the last time I read were leaving the UK because of everyone interferings with kids, the 24th attempted abduction this year of a child into a car happened within a 15 minute radius of us. Nice upmarket beach areas too.
Ive seen some completely untrue rubbish written on here about a missing local boy but its done one thing most of these pervs trying to pick up kids now makes a story in the papers, which makes people aware of their kids being in danger.I had an argument here with a woman who arrived and announced it was safe to walk on the beach at night, a month later the front page headline for that area Gold Coast was Perverts Paradise regarding rapes and murders on the beach.
Dont let a sunny facade cloud your reality.

Odat, I've always been a leader in style, not a manager.
If thngs get too abstract then I lose interest. I like the detail to the extent - my wife probably thinks I plan too much - and I'm quite conservative - othertimes I'm just "suck it and see".

[But wouldn't the consultant have used the faster ADO, not ODBC connection?
No, of course not, cos he was charging by the second...]

Ozzie managers are great in dealing with tigger economies, it takes Leaders to create *Tiger* economies.
No wonder the likes of the one dimensional Badger has the managers shi**ing themselves and the likes of Mike the bodger gets a comfy office and puffy management title to feel good about himself c/o of *your* labour.
Lets see what the next few years when Ozzie property price collapse, poor to negative economic growth, high interest bank loans and recession bring along from management and leaders alike in Ozzie.
Heres a tip when - wait for a management soundbite on employing yet more "work smart" managers just as the company / economy goes pearshaped.

reminds me of a joke I heard many years ago about Noah ....
leadership is what he demonstarted when he persuaded all the animals to enter the ark.
Management is what he demonstrated when he stopped the elephants from seeing what the rabbits were up to !!!!

Yes, but the usual Australian practice is to present a 'representational' picture of 2 anglos, 1 asian, 1 indian, 1 arab, a half-caste of indiscriminate origins and sometimes a child with Down's Syndrome thrown in for good measure. No wonder Kellogs have stuck to just the bowl!
By the way, welcome to Oz Bluebristonlian. Glad you like it.

I've been here for 2 weeks, and although it is early days, I can honestly say I feel far more at home here than I have felt in the UK for years. Of the reasons for leaving, one (apart from the weather) comes up consitently among the ex-pats I have talked to so far. One thing I've observed sums it up for me. I love Kellogs Crunchy Nut Cornflakes. In the UK, the packet has a big picture of two happy smiling black people. In Australia the packet just has a picture of the Cornflakes.
