Not sure I want to tackle the DIY cartriges just yet though
We buy ours for Kmart, generally in multipacks. Hubby was on about refilling them but as the cartridges last longer than the older style ones for now he's decided it's not worth it.

The older cartridges (round ones) only use to last a month but the Maxtra ones last for 2 months. I have one of the sports bottles & because of the amount I use it the cartridge in that doesn't last 3 months, I only get about 2 months out of it.

You need to be careful with over using the cartridges as I believe they can start filtering the stuff they've drawn out of the water back in to it. I know with my sports bottle it becomes very hard to squeeze the water through it once the filter has been over used.

$35 for a pack of 4 in a KMart in Sydney today.

Does anyone else find the water bottles start to smell nasty after a while? I tried to clean them with hot water but daren't get it too hot. I don't use Napisan or anything like that these days, so not sure what else to try. Bicarb?

I'm looking to get a reverse osmosis filter tap fitted now we have our own place - well, as soon as I get round to it.
