I'll try to be a bit more specific: Hubby is not bothered about travelling to and from The Mater, so if I am right in thinking there are good bus and train links, it wouldn't matter if we were a bit further out.
Ideally, we'd love a one level, brick built, 4 bed, modern house with a pool. We will be renting initially and can afford max of $320 per week.
Have two girls of primary school age and the hospital suggested Carindale, Coorparoo and Cannon Hill for schools. Can anyone comment on these?
Not bothered about having to travel to coast for beach. I understand there is a nice man made beach in the city somewhere.
Ideally would love to move in to an area where there are lots of families so that we and the kids can make friends quickly.
Hope you can help.
Cheers.

Dagboy has a dry sense of humour. Don't think he intended to be sarcastic
To answer your questions: I'm fairly new in Aus [8 months] so not able to tell you anything constructive about Carindale, Cannon Hill or Coorparoo other than I've been shopping at Carindale, I do my weekly shop at Cannon Hill and Coorparoo I've seen from the train as it's whizzed past whilst going into Brisbane town center.
What I can tell you is that if you'd like to live within 25 mins car ride or 40 mins train/bus ride of Brisbane center and like an area where there are lots of families...then have you thought about the Bayside? There are also plenty of great schools to chose from and there are some really great family places /things to do.
Maybe try this site and ask questions; http://s6.invisionfree.com/BrisbaneB...ex.php?act=idx
As for rentals within you price range. Maybe try this site;
http://www.realestate.com.au/cgi-bin...ch?a=bhp&t=res
Hopefully this is a good starting point and when Australia wakes up Im sure some of the Expats will respond with more useful information within the areas you mentioned above

Trust me, if he had been truly sarcastic, you'd know about it
.
On the original question, to avoid the traffic (although being nurses you could conceivably be working shifts), Id choose something either along the rail link (however the suburbs close in are older & established, not many new builds, so you would have to head out to Wellington Point/bayside area), or on the bus route (there are to many bus routes to cover, but its likely you will get one to the Mater, as its one of the main bus hubs on the southside).
As for the suburbs you mentioned, doubt that you will get anything to rent in Carindale for the sort of money you want to pay although there are plenty of new houses there & is a very good area, Cannon Hill has mainly older houses, private school there is supposedly very good, Coorparoo is nice, but once again older houses.
I could name a dozen suburbs that are nice & in easy commuting distance to the Mater, the problem is that you require a new house (& the pool doesnt make it any easier when it comes to renting, it will cut down the choice of houses by a large amount). If I were you I would consider Wellington Point/Ormiston/Cleveland (have a look at the link PUK posted earlier for bayside forum) or somewhere south of Brisbane like Calamvale/Drewvale/eight mile plains area.
If I think of any others I will let you know

Heres one for you Nick
http://www.realestate.com.au/cgi-bin...=&fmt=&header=
Just dont look at the address & you'll be right!
I think the pool part will be the hardest to fill (no pun inteded!), firstly not that many houses for rent have pools anyway and also new houses tend to be on new estates which quite often have smaller block sizes & any rentals have been specifically bought as investments (ie no investor in his right mind would install a pool for tenants).
Having said that, if the pool part is negotiable, have a look at Wakerley area as well as the ones I mentioned earlier, a massive amount of new housing estates in that area, you may find something there that will suit.

Some are very nice.
Don't tar us all with the same brush.
No idea about that particular area though.

Ok, maybe not the pool, but I have seen some beautiful houses in Carindale around $300 per week!
Once we get settled, we can buy a house and then sort out the swimming pool bit.
Many thanks for all your replies and suggestions.
Bye for now.

Hope to hear from you soon.

I'm a brickie and my wife looks after handicapped children in her job. As your hoping to be moving out in November, you've obviously already got your visa's..we're still at the dreaming about it stage, reading up on what's what !! How long did take from starting the ball rolling to actually getting your visa's. I hope everything goes well for you's and good luck........

Thanks for your interest! We don't actually have our visa's yet. We are waiting to get registered with the Queensland NursingCouncil, then the hospital will apply for them. We have been told it shouldn't take too long, so we are planning for November. We only started our research at the beginning of the year, but it can be fairly quick for nurses from what I can gather as they want us out there to work.
Good luck with your preparations and keep in touch.

Not that there is anything wrong with those houses at all, but they arent quite what you are hoping to rent
.This one is $330/week - exactly what you want (minus the pool)

until you see the pic & notice the huge powerlines that run about 20 metres from the back of the house
:scared: .Caveat Emptor applies even when you rent

Oh comon... Regents park is a beautiful new estate.
Just out of curiosity... checked out unemloyment rate in Kenmore, to compare with Crestmead. Kenmore turned out to have higher rate!...
