- Bushwalking on your doorstep (quite literally as you're in The Gap)..
- Picnics with 5ft Goannas waddling around scavenging
- Living through some of the best and most exciting summer storms complete with massive thunder and lightening, golf ball hail, torrential rain that has your gutters spewing everywhere and the road flowing like a river...
- Diving with huge Manta rays off N. Stradbroke Island
- Watching a game of aerial ping-pong or an ashes cricket clash at the Gabba
- Wallowing in the pool on a balmy summers night, clutching a cold beer and wondering why you ever chose to live in such a silly climate.
- 4WDing down the beach at Bribie Island (or up to Fraser Island if you can be bothered).
- Standing in crowds at South Bank to watch the "Riverfire" fireworks each year...
None of these on their own are truly remarkable, or 'mean anything' - but when you put them all together along with no doubt a bunch of other things I think you can fill 4 years worth of memories with valuable experiences that'll make you feel like you didnt just waste life here.

Where can i picnic with 5ft ignuanas? That sounds cool.
Climate is pretty special just having spent 2 weeks with the kids off school.
The bay is kinda special - cycling/walking with the bay views, crab hunting, day trip to the islands - its not big surf but then it would be a totally different place which i wouldnt like.

In my area of Brisbane I love the hills, the greenery, the lovely trees, the queenslander houses, the flowers, the shrubs, the picket fences, the decks, the crazy steep and higgeldy piggedly streets, the little local creeks, the weather, the little wooden shops selling interesting antiques, clothes, cafes, the animals, the insects, the fig trees, the safe, pleasant, peaceful life I can have right near a major city. I love the surrounding parks with their nice trees, maintained play equipment, nice people and safe environment for my kids. Perfect for my stage in life.
In Brisbane I personally enjoy the great west end and northey st markets, the city cats, GOMA, performing arts complex, state library, qld museum, powerhouse museum, science museum etc, south bank, west end, highgate hill, woolloongabba antiques, bulimba, paddington, city bike paths and new farm park.
Around Brisbane I like the mountains just 6km from the city, bike and walking trails, countryside, oreilly's, springbrook/tamborine mountain, glass house mountains, mary valley, currumbin, beautiful northern nsw, mt warning, amazing fraser island, moreton island, south and north stradbroke islands, moreton bay, inskip, lake cootharbra, noosa river, northshore, teewah, noosa national park, sunshine beach, toowoomba architecture, gold coast southern beaches, boromba dam and other camp sites behind maleny, monteville and mapleton.
I agree, none of it taken alone would make headlines around the world and it is more like pleasantville then new york...man has built no eiffel towers here...but when you go and explore over time you can have some pretty unique experiences that more often involve the experience of living in a sub tropical place than admiring a man made object...it is these things you will remember if you try them...float down a clear stream on fraser island until you hit the beach, have a pack of dolphins play with you for over half in your mates boat with the gold coast towers in the background, put back the sunroof, turn on the radio and drive up the beach for hours, watch huge lizards fight in front of you, be amazed by some incredible rain, walk down your favorite street with the winter sunshine making you happy. Some of the moments are great but usually just a contentment for me.....a bit like Glasgow many pass through in a rush without seeing the hidden charms...

Brisbane apparently is the only city named after the River it is built on....it was a 500,000 pound question on Who wants to be a millionaire back in about 2005 !!!!!

Best spots for them are the picnic spots in Brisbane Forest Park - the Camp Mountain BBQ spot seems to have a couple almost permanently in residence from spring until autumn - but I've seen them at Jollys lookout and Boombana too.
There are also a lot of them on Mt Cootha and have run into them scavenging around the BBQs at the Grey Gum picnic spot on a couple of occassions. Mt Cootha BBQs however, are far more likely to be troubled by very assertive Kookaburras who have no qualms whatsoever about ripping apart any bags full of food, taking sausages off the hot BBQ, or even swooping down and taking food out of your hands if you dont pay attention.
Thankfully the goanna population are a little less aggressive and just waddle around the BBQs looking for scraps.
