Brisbane is.................
famous for what?
Anything? Been here 5 months now and I honestly couldn't tell you one thing Brisbane is famous for, anything that identifies it from anywhere else. It's just all a bit blah isn't it? |

Ive yet to find any aussie city that really stands out, in that 'world class' way as they say here . The obvious one is sydney, nice harbour but really all to be seen is in a very small area. First time there nice, after that its been there done that. Melbournes a shocker for the tourist, awful especially in the wrong weather. Cairns was a dump, when I saw it, very run down. Sorry if its improved now. Perth I loved the empty highways:thumbup: Adelaide a few nice buildings. Canberra - easy to get around. Darwin, I loved the multicultural scene, but OMG it was humid. I think Brisbane has produced some really awful politicians - maybe thats it:lol: |
Re: Brisbane is.................
Is living somewhere famous important to you?
Why not settle for living somewhere pleasant, reasonably well run (although not faultlessly so), with a low crime rate, good schools, reasonably decent international transport links and an enviable climate for at least 9 months of the year? I dont think theres much that 'stands out' about Brisbane on an international scale - but its probably a little more note-worthy and happening than Basingstoke that I left behind! |

I'm not worried about it being famous, I'm just wondering if it offers something no where else does, anything. You know the kind of thing where in 4 years when my visa runs out I can say I did this or I did that and it would actually mean something.

Re: Brisbane is.................
Not Brisbane specifically, but Moreton Bay is famous for its beaches, protected from the waves by Moreton and Stradbroke islands.

Re: Brisbane is.................
I think that Brisbane is a good base to explore other areas, such as the various nearby islands, the hinterland of the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast, northern NSW and huge chunks further north, such as Fraser Island, Whitsundays and FNQ. I personally didn't find anything particularly attractive about Brisbane itself.

Not a patch on the seabus vancouver - especially the last one home:D or when there is snow on the mountains:wub:. |
Re: Brisbane is.................
- Bushwalking on your doorstep (quite literally as you're in The Gap)..
- Picnics with 5ft Goannas waddling around scavenging - Living through some of the best and most exciting summer storms complete with massive thunder and lightening, golf ball hail, torrential rain that has your gutters spewing everywhere and the road flowing like a river... - Diving with huge Manta rays off N. Stradbroke Island - Watching a game of aerial ping-pong or an ashes cricket clash at the Gabba - Wallowing in the pool on a balmy summers night, clutching a cold beer and wondering why you ever chose to live in such a silly climate. - 4WDing down the beach at Bribie Island (or up to Fraser Island if you can be bothered). - Standing in crowds at South Bank to watch the "Riverfire" fireworks each year... None of these on their own are truly remarkable, or 'mean anything' - but when you put them all together along with no doubt a bunch of other things I think you can fill 4 years worth of memories with valuable experiences that'll make you feel like you didnt just waste life here. |

We won tickets to the bridge climb. In sydney it was $800 freaking bucks for a family:eek: In bris if we had paid it would have been more $250. Anyway I was pleasantly surprised, we even saw a dolphin:lol: Mind you it was one of those stunning winter days, crisp, clear as crystal, thats something brisbane ( QLD ) does really well. |

Storms - I LOVE the qld storms  is there anything as dramatic or scary. One of my fondest memories of living here for sure. And the wildlife which as you say is all around you. |

That's up to you, only you can make this happen. Just an idea that I thought of quickly, if you want to do something that 'would actually mean something', volunteer to help some disabled Brisbane kids - that would mean a hell of a lot of 'something' to them.
Ultimately we're all worm-food, probably the only thing you can do that would 'mean something' is to have kids, and that is just propagating DNA that will eventually die out with the rest of mankind. I think I'll listen to some Radiohead now, I may not be back. |
