Bringing Our Cat
We really want to bring our cat over with us.
Any advice (serious please!)?
Do rental properties allow pets normally?
Anyone else done this...and how much did it cost?
thanks

Re: Bringing Our Cat
Hi
We are going to bring our cats too! Not sure of the price but I know it's expensive - I think between £1000-£1500!!
From what I have read on here lots of rentals accept pets upon application and I have heard a few people say that they are usually okay if you say that you will pay for any damage caused by your pet.
Bermuda Shorts will be able to give more info about this as she has recently taken over her two cats. Obviously middle of the night in Aus so don't expect a response yet
Good luck!

Re: Bringing Our Cat
Hi,
we brought 2 cats over last year to Melbourne. Should be able to give you all the advice you need. Here is some - feel free to ask for more:
* If you think you ever want to rtn to uk make sure you get pet passport prior to leaving - a good vet can help you out with this.
* Shop around for agent and negotiate on price - we used whitehouse kennels and were very happy with them.
* Cat will have to do 30 days quarantine in Aus - you can visit them
* We rent a house in Melbourne and cats are allowed. This is not always the case though - some landlords allow and some don't, you just have to look around.
* Attitude to pets here seems to be fine - no problem.
Hope this helps - let me know if you have any specific questions.

Re: Bringing Our Cat
We brought two cats over and the cost, including quarantine was about GBP 3k. We used a company called Golden Arrow as they were the cheapest and we were quite happy, until we went to collect the cats and saw their crates for the first time. They were a lot smaller than the ones Airpets provided four years earlier when we moved to Bermuda and also there was not much mesh so the cats would not have had a good sight of each other on the journey.
Quarantine was very stressful for us, but I am not going to scare you with my woes. Most animals come out the other side not much worse for their experience.
We organised pet passports before we left the UK, just in case. If you don't get one, you would need to plan a return trip home well in advance as otherwise the cat is stuck in UK quarantine. After the month my cats spent in quarantine, I would not wish six months on any animal.
We had no problems whatsoever finding somewhere to rent with the two cats and were open and honest about it up front. Only two out of about 15 places we enquired about said no. We were looking for houses, it could be different for apartments.

Also worth noting that pets need to be registered and microchipped in Victoria and there may be other restrictions eg. in Geelong there is a cat curfew - ie they are not allowed out at night...........

Re: Bringing Our Cat
24 hour confinement of cats
The Shire has adopted a municipality-wide Order which requires all cats to be contained within the owner’s property at all times. This Order has been made to facilitate the resolution of persistent problems associated with stray and feral cats and to protect cats from attack and fatal diseases. The Shire encourages responsible cat ownership and owners should ensure that their cat(s) are registered and confined to their properties at all times.
Confining your cat is also the best way to protect your cat and our wildlife and avoid Objection Notices and possible fines if your cat is found roaming your neighbours' properties.
Infringement notices (fines) and types of other notices include:
• Cats found at large or not securely confined to their owner’s property are liable to on-the-spot penalties of more than $100 for a first offence and more than $300 for subsequent offences.
• Cats creating a nuisance are liable to on-the-spot penalties of $100.
Roaming cats can get hit by cars, injured in cat fights, catch fatal diseases or become lost. Cats that live indoors also generally live at least three times longer than cats which are allowed to roam.
Cats can be confined in the house or flat, but remember to ensure your cat can access window ledges for sunshine. You can also give your cat grass to chew (non toxic varieties such as oats or rye-grass).
Cat enclosures are also a good idea, restricting your cat to a designated outside area. These can be purchased from pet shops or built by a handyman. Some tips to build your own cat enclosure include using clear netting to enclose your courtyard alleyway or veranda, building your own A-frame enclosure with chicken wire or adapting an aviary.

Re: Bringing Our Cat
The quotes we are getting to take our cat to Aus do NOT appear to include for the 30 day quarantine costs when she arrives (just the arrangement fee)
Anyone got any idea of costs for the 30 days?
Thanks

Re: Bringing Our Cat
I can't remember if you have said where you are going, but bear in mind that Queensland has no quarantine station, so you will need to look at Melbourne or Sydney if that is where you are headed. We booked ours into Melbourne, and they were very well looked after, but we then had to pay Dogtainers another $300 to get them flown up here.

Re: Bringing Our Cat
The quotes generally don't include the quarantine costs. Don't have my paperwork here at the moment but from memory it is about 30 dollars a day for first cat.

Our cat arrived safely.Picked her up yesterday from quarentine and she was pleased to see us! She is fit and well and settling in well.
We would definately recommend Airpets!

Our cat wouldn't be able to afford this...

Re: Bringing Our Cat
We are in the process of having our cat shipped over now. We decided to go with Airpets who have been fantastic so far and have had no problem with my phoning 3 times a day to ask questions!!
They werent the cheapest,£2007, for one cat not including quarantine but we very recently lost our other cat when she ran out of my sisters house onto the road and we just wanted Lola over asap. They were the quickest to come back with a quote and after waiting for nearly a year to get them over(visa taking ever to grant-mine not the cats! )
she hasnt arrived yet but the wheels are in motion and Sarah Whittington at Airpets has been great.
