Bricklayers Down Under (2)
Posted on this forum about 4 weeks ago, four bricklayers started for a sub contractor on $250 a day, then moved on to another subbie for $300 dollars a day. Come the end of the week he done a runner with the money, had no option but to comr home, savings had run out and no money for rent, food, car hire etc. Got the guys home address and phone number, just story after story, no chance of money now. Came to the conclusion that we were too trusting and all the subbies we dealt with were liars, thiefs and bushwackers who didn't keep their promises. Im sure there are good guys as well but unfortunately we didn't meet any of them. Four dreams ruined.

Unfortunately the building industry in OZ a rather harsh one, and when there are already far more workers than jobs in the industry you do have to wonder why the OZ govt keeps construction jobs on the skills list.
However the UK media does not help matters by constantly giving the impression the building industry in OZ is a fast track a grand a day and workers have a glass of champagne in their hands rather than sweat, shovel and a fly swatter.
But in any job, emigrating to any country, you do need to arrive with substantial funds to see you over a few months, a year ideally, set up costs can be huge and jobs often dont appear as quick as one would like.
At least now you and your mates (and families) know the grass isnt greener and can move on where you are

Tradies in oz are treated like shit buy the big house builders so in return they do a shit job (not every one is as i state) i am building a house myself and have found that trades would rather work on smaller builds than big ones as they dont get paid for a month or two from the big house builders, At present you can find a lot of trades to do your work, coming to oz as a brickie from the uk is going to be hard work and you will get a lot of shit.
The house builders here dont care about anyone except themselves, they will hire and drop trades from one job to another, no constant work
