However, there are no opportunities for our children where we are, we dont want them growing up in the ned culture here, we hate the uk attitide to alcohol, its a part of life here and think the attitide. We like the thought of bringing our children up with an active lifestyle being involved in sports, being in the outdoors (ie its doesnt pee down of rain for 360 days of the year) and being amongst friendly people. Would like to live in a smallish community near to beach. So is it worth emigrating or shoudl we stay put and be content?

No the grass isn't greener - but it tastes a lot sweeter.

Give it a go, life's too short for 'what if's'..

But the grass is not always greener:unsure:

FWIW nursing wages are similar in what you can buy for your earnings (if that makes sense :) )

How absolutely true. This should be made into a graphic and stuck at the top of the forum.

Difficult question to answer.

When I spent a year here I went through a whole mixture of emotions, some real highs and some real lows.

If you are willing to embrace the lifestyle, the locals and the culture you will be fine.

Some people that go over find the social aspect a lot worse than back in some of the major cities in the UK.

But if you are happy just going out for a meal and relaxing outside in lovely beer gradens in front of the beach then you will be fine.

I have a passion for fishing so whenever I am going through a bad patch i will be out as much as possible.

The outdoor persuits in Oz are amongst the best in the world so try and take full advantage of them.

Be realistic. Dont expect everyone to welcome you with open arms and from my own personal experience, I hope you have a thick skin. Be prepared to receive plenty of banter, especially when the locals hear your accent.

99% of it is friendly but I have experineced genuine aggression in both Oz and Nz from some folk when they have heard my accent.

In my opinion, speaking as someone who lives in Govan, the Pro's far outweigh the Cons. Plus my wife is Kiwi so she will be nearer her Mum.

Even if you set aside a saving scheme that will allow you to get a flight home every 2 years will help a lot, thats what i plan to do.

Its better to have loved and lost than to have never loved at all if you know what I mean.

Good luck

Jamie

Very much the same reasons as us and we haven't regretted it. Good luck whatever you decide. Where is your small community.

We're in the same boat as you. My husband and I, our two daughters aged 9 and 7 live in a small village in Scotland. We have a lovely house, kids at a lovely school but we just dont feel happy living in the UK. What kind of life will the girls have here once they are older?! We've talked about leaving the Uk for years and talked about NZ and OZ. We've pretty much made our minds up to try for OZ now, Id hate to regret not giving it a chance while we are still young enough (my husband is 42) so watch this space!

Aye, you've got to have realistic expections. I reckon if you emigrate expecting to escape something (either within yourself or external) then you are setting yourself up for failure.

In short - If you're miserable in the UK then you will be miserable anywhere.

Also, if you have a happy comfortable life where you are and the only reason for up-sticksing is to escape some factor that is more to do with human nature than location then you should think twice.

I agree with all the above. Life isn't always greener... same problems...different country. From my own experience, I think it all depends on the life you had in the UK whether you will settle in Oz.

Our life in Australia is the same as it was in the UK, except we have more sun.
Our kids play outdoor's rain or shine, so the outdoor life hasn't changed that much for us. But every day life is still the same and I now realise my family mean more to me than sunny days.

We've been here 8 months and will be returning to the UK next year. We just didn't appreciate the UK until it was gone...you learn from your mistakes I guess.

But, moving to Australia is something we had to do...if we hadn't, we would have been left wondered 'what if'. We are glad and feel very lucky to have had this opportunity and do not regret a moment of it...a life experience we wouldn't have done without. Now we know it wasn't for us or it just wasn't the right time...maybe it will in the future. We are leaving Oz with an open door!!! We can now cross it off our 'to do list' and can now move forward!!

My advice is ...if you feel it's something you have to do, then do it. What do you have to lose. Life must be lived and lived it must.

Good luck with your decision.

We have just got our visas.. and we should be off in the next couple of months..

My story is a little different in as My OH has always wanted to live in Oz (was there in his 20s) and I was prepared to go when we got married, but they would only give us a temporary visa despite him having a job over there ... so we didnt go as it was very important to OH that we were granted a permenant visa..

10 years later.......

We have got it! And I havent ever been or seen the place that I am going to live in!

Some people think I am doolaaleetap, but I have made a pact with myself that I will give it a try for 5 years... and after 5 years I can "come home" if I want to.. (with my citizenship in place etc etc)..

Something tells me that after 5 years in a place (I have moved around a lot in my life) I won't be wanting to come back to expensive, cold England! (but if I do, then I can!)

It's all about getting my mindset right for me?!

The only way youll ever know is if you go .But you are describing a life that many expats still yearn for and are going to return because of it .
Why not try another part of the uk first? migrating is not always the answer as the western world is pretty much the same all over these days .
